I get on the trip 2 45mpg. 5 speed tdi with a motech map. Tonight on a 20 mile trip back from work with no traffic I got 52mpg. That was over a 20 mile trip on single carriage way normal roads.

Get about 550 miles to a tank. Wouldn't mind a 6 speed for the motorway but until mine needs changing I'm staying put.

I get about 500 miles from a full tank with an economy remap, unsure of the name as it was done before I brought it.
Mostly motorway sitting around 80-90mph with tools

my caddy is a 5 speed.. I can only speak from experience! ..I used to drive a 6 speed sharan, mainly motorway miles, my colleagues drove different versions of the same! they were 5 speed... we used to comment how much different the economy was....

Ive owned both now, my first van had 140bhp and six speed, my current van has 140bhp and five speed and to be honest there is virtually nothing in it, strangely the 5speed is quicker, although they were both remapped the same and I get 550-600 miles on a full tank from either, the onyl thing the 6speed does is lower cruising rpms (so you can cruise Motorway at 80-85 where as 5speed is 70-75)

So there you go, I guess the 6 speed is more robust for more serious engine mods.

Muroc's hit it on nail really, the 6th lowers revs, so you can go fast but be at same revs as the 5th gear box's

So u should get similar mpg but cruise at higher speed

I've had golf mk4 with 5 & 6 gear and at 75+mph the mpg is similar BUT if u do 60mph cruise on motorway you will notice more mpg with the 6speed because the revs are so low that the turbo is barely boosting but it will be on the 5speed, again not a huge diff but if u do 30,000 miles a year like me then it saves loads of money and wear on the rather weak 105pd engine :)

I've also only ever noticed a difference when in 6th vs a 5speed, around town or B roads its all the same
