Canbus gateway upgrades ...

Evening all, first post .... I'm on here as a Touran owner curious as to what you guys do to your Caddys as the Touran scene is a bit tame in UK.
Anyway, I came across something yesterday when getting my mechanic to fit and code a new spec canbus gateway before I fit a new RCD310DAB stereo to my poverty spec 2004 Touran ...
The mechanic connected the car to Autologic diagnostics which reported a canbus gateway firmware update was available ... I was dubious because EVERYONE says a new higher spec canbus has to be fitted to avoid overnight battery drain when fitting the next generation VW stereos, however I was persuaded to give it a whirl.
Stereo fitted and works beautifully even the DAB using the standard window aerial, and I had an anxious night wondering if the old girl would start so I could get to work this morning.
I had no faith in this firmware update but it seems to have worked, the car started beautifully this morning, no sign of battery drain.
I would recommend this solution to anyone upgrading stereos it's a bloody site easier than stripping the dash, or crawling under the steering wheel and makes upgrade VW stereos a real option for all mk5 platform cars.
