rns510 versions

Post by vwbaz »

Been looking to upgrade to a rns510 headunit for a while, but I'm confused by all the version numbers available :?:

Anybody know the difference, and am I better off going for a certain version number?

I've just put in a 310 dab, apparently these cause drain too but touch wood it's been ok for 2 days. Not sure how strong the drain is. Ie. will the batt be flat after one night?!

The drain is really severe so you'll know if you have it!
If you're battery goes flat, be really careful jump starting it. I've seen so many T5 and Caddy ABS modules get blown up by very flat batteries getting jump started.
Best advise is to charge the battery up off the van or leave the jump leads on for a good few minutes to get a lump of charge in before attempting to crank.
Hopefully you won't need that advise.

It depends what year your Caddy is. If it's pre 2007 there's a good chance it will drain. Generally VCDS will tell you if you have canbus, early canbus or even k-bus. Even some early canbus require a can gateway upgrade. There's even a k-bus to canbus adaptor available.
Basically in a nutshell, think of canbus as a system of electronic modules that are controlled by one master module. When a RNS510 is introduced incompatibly, it will keep the entire canbus system awake causing heavy drain.

Cheers for the info, seen a few on eBay being advertised as version F and P? I guess they are just newer then, I take it they all fit?
Some sellers also advertise saying no battery drain, but surely they can't guarantee this this depending on your canbus version.

If your can gateway is earlier than version L you will need to change. My 2008 caddy came with a version L as it had the RCD 310. If your caddy has the RCD 300 it's likely that you may have earlier than version L.

L and newer can gateways are available on ebay for £40-£60 and really easy to change over. It's a 10 min, 1 plug swap but you then need to recode it on vag com or nothing will work.

I don't think the version of the RNS 510 makes any difference to the battery drain issue.

So if you already have a rns315 you can't simply upgrade to a rns510?

You can because thats what I've just done but the bluetooth is built in on the 315 and you need a seperate bt module for the 510. Plus, if you want a DAB 510 to replace a DAB 315 you're looking at £900 if you can find one.
