mine is 05 tdi with 105k miles just listen out for a rattle on idle that goes when u depress the clutch and if it has a rattle bargain for it with a new clutch allowance ! got new clutch in mine for i think 750 euro or so and that was a LUK dual mass set up , u can buy a solid version but i didnt like to chance it

got mine for a little over 4k so adding clutch etc probably cost me 5350 all in which is about right for a 05 model but at least all is done if u know what i mean instead of spending 5350 and then having to replace all !

would i be right in thinking that i should pick up a clean non builder full spec 05-07 with around 80-110,000 miles for in or around 6,000€

ya DSG would be the job but obviously more expemsive Caddy's and Transporters are about the only commercial vans holding value i have my 05 2 and a half years and its only deprciated about 2 grand which aint bad considering you might find some 06 with the apperance pack ( english one's ) there are two types of engine i know of mines BLS it'll be first letters on vin plate these have a eletronic EGR and give way less air problems and the EGR tends to only get dirty with carbon build up rather then the old vacum systems filling with all sorts of gunk etc.... As loam said watch for Flywheel noise as this is the caddy weak link chaeck service history to see if it's been done, Timing is "120k" before its advised so watch for that too. Try your best to get a TDi for escorting will be far more enjoyable and electric pack.

You might also consider a 6 speed conversion would suit your work...

DSG is semi auto you get paddle shift too

Electric pack is windows and mirrors

Apperance is a touran front bumper the front and rear are colour coded came on later models not sure when they started though

so dsg would be an advantage over manual . electric pack would be a must .

not many has fogs fitted ..

dont think the apperance pack is much of an advantage tbh could colour code the norm bumpers.

there is very few dsg modles out there .

what other spec is wort haveing .

and would i be right in saying id be best of get one with under 100k or over 120k which would mean the clutch and fly wheel n timeing belt water pump would ether have roughly 20,000 miles left or have been done .

The origanal dual mass flywheels can self destruct from anything between 0 and 150-200k but seems to be sooner rather then later
