Help! Airbag error after fitting new wheel.

Post by mix_vw_caddy »

OK, so I've installed the new MFSW all went together OK.
I scan and clear the airbag fault, but this keeps coming up under Airbag in scan.
1 Fault Found:
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

Ross Tech says this:

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95): Resistance too Low
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95): Resistance too High
Possible Symptoms
Airbag Warning Light active
Possible Causes
Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty
Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138) faulty
Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)
Check Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138)
Check Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)

So, off to recheck wiring I guess.
Any other suggestions?
Mike.

Don't panic - I worked it out.

After removing the wheel, airbag, shrouds etc down to the slipring, checked all the conections and the controller.
Couldn't find any probs.

Thought maybe change the airbag harness to a Mark 5 MF one I have, but they're different - 1 extra wire on Mk 6.

So, checking the airbag wiring for tiny breaks in the wiring and - Doh! - centre purple plug not pushed down properly.
Reassemble (again!), VagCom, clear airbag error - stays off! Yay!

All that's left is to recalibrate steering sensor.
I have tried many options as listed and on VAGCOM site, but none have worked yet.
When I follow VAGCOM and go to ABS module to recode, it won't let me access Login 11.
It had a greyed out Coding - 11 instead.

There is an option to reset to factory standard, which I may do if I can't get it to work. I'm hoping it means resetting to the vehicle, not just to blank again!

Remind me why we do these things again? ;-)

Mike.

And now it's fixed too!
In case this is of use to others, below is an alternative for those not able to access Coding 11.
Maybe it's a new car thing?
Worked for me!
Now, do I quit while I'm ahead, or start on the bluetooth? Hmmmmm.

[Select]
[44 - Steering Assist]
[Coding-II - 11] or if that function is not available then use [Sec.Access - 16] instead
Enter 40168, to enable the basic setting.
[Do it!]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 060
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
After a successful basic setting, field 1 should say "OK".
[Done, Go Back]
To make sure the basic setting was succesful, check the sensor again.
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 007
[Go!]
Check field 1, the value has to be between -1.5 and +1.5 °.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
