07 Caddy SDI short gearing?

Post by Longie »

Hi all, i changed my 04 caddy tdi for a 07 caddy sdi (i know,i know but the price was right). Its underpowered
for sure but what worries me is the short gearing? When i'm at 100kph its at 3000rpm and on the motorway
doing 140kph its at 4000rpm....500rpm off the redline! Gulp.

Just wondering are they all geared this short? She's crying out for a 6th gear.

Thanks lads

Thanks jjbiker,ya it was a sweet deal alright even though the SDI is dead as a bag.I might look up that
crowd for the mapping,i wonder what the power gains are with the sdi though...

Remapping an SDI won't get you much more power, probably 10bhp extra if your lucky, straight diesels don't tend to map well, nowhere near as much as a Turbo Diesel.. Plus it won't help with the short gearing, an SDI would need to be reving heavily to keep her at 140kpm on a motorway, the difference between TDi and SDi is like night n day, totaly different in terms of performance.. Not slating the SDi but it will never touch the TDi for power..

Would a remap not give the SDI more torque? Has anyone on the forum had it done?

I had a free lease 2010 SDi today whilst mine was serviced and I really noticed the short gearing. 130kph @3400 rpm!! I was constantly trying to change into 6th :) I know mine has a 6 speed box, but in comparison it'll do 160kph @3100 rpm.

And sorry but I have to say it, damn is the SDi slow. My old mk2 1.9 sdi was quicker!

That's fierce high revving but the gears need to be short in order to make the low torque output usefull enough to get it moving and as said already no point remapping NA it won't make any noticeable improvement tbh.
