Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Had mine done today at a independent garage I know well, about £300 for belt kit, water pump, and labour, mine is a 2011 1.6tdi with 64,000 on the clock, I asked if it had any sign of wear and he showed me the old belt and you could see hair line cracks all over!. Vw say 120,000 or 4 years! No way would I risk waiting till 120,000!.

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
I'm an engine reconditioner and see the damage caused by broken can belts all the time I would never let any cam belt go past 5 years or 40.000 miles and yes do the water pump at the same time as the cam belt runs on it.
And I would say between 220 and 300 pounds plus vat would be a reasonable price if fittin genuine parts

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Still a lot cheaper that a broken cam belt
As belt valves and punched hydraulic followers head rebuild and gaskets would easily set you back between 700 and a 1000 pounds

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Had mine given a full service recently and got the same advice from the stealer. i was told its 4 years or 100k miles whichever comes first. Mine is 5 years old with 35 k on the clock, dealer wanted £500 including the vat to do it. i got it done with an independant using genuine VW parts including water pump for £350.
The real question here is do you feel lucky, not get it done and risk a dead engine from cam belt snap or spend some dosh to be on the safe side. Mine was ex british gas so i would have expected it to have been done 12 months before i got it. i just didn't want to risk it

Volkswagen have a data base with your details of the vans service history. They will happily give you a print out if you ask them. I did this with my van when I purchased it from a independent van sales company. I contacted VW and they told me. If I got to any VW franchise they will give you all the information they have on your vans service history. Remember I.D and you V5 for data protection reasons.
I did this for my 60 plate caddy as I was unsure as to whether the belt and pump had been done. With this information and some service paperwork I was able to trace former keepers and the history of the vans use. All good information if you ever decide to sell the van on, or for peace of mind which was my reason. I.M.O I would be changing the belt and pump when the months intervals or mileage, whatever comes first. I'd rather shell it £300 than be looking at a new engine.

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Just bought a caddy with 95k on the clock and 9 years old... no record of cambelt every being done by previous owners (will have to ask VW as was ex British Gas originally). Think I should probably get this done asap, how difficult is it? Might consider doing it myself if it's going to be expensive... anyone had experience/got advice doing cambelt/water pump change yourself? Cheers

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Ofc this only works if the previous owner had their van serviced at VW.
I'm pretty sure the British gas service their own vans etc

Re: Cambelt and waterpump
Your right Ken. I alway go through the paperwork when purchasing any vehicle, however if it's a fleet van for a company like British Gas they usually have a contract with a large in house vehicle mainatance company. Usually with these kind of company's it's no expense spared on servicing. If there is no history at all it has to get done. £280 to £380 should be enough for all parts and labour. To tackle this job your self you need to know what your doing. I haven't done one on a VW but have on other vehicles. I would think you would need to lock the engine, which might mean a specialist tool.
Btw does anyone know when the gearbox oil needs replaced

Yes there are locking tools for all the VW engines
As for gearbox oil I don't think they do a service change time so I would say it's up to you. I guess 50.000 miles would be ok in my opinion
