Air-con retrofit.

Post by tommyzooom » Tue Jan 31, 2017 6:14 pm

I have been offered a damaged donor Caddy, albeit a maxi........ with air-con.
I have to dismantle the air-con myself though!

If anyone has already done this i'd appreciate any help on what to bring with me...
apart from the obvious... control panel, pump, heater box, pipework etc........what else, I assume there is cabin temp' sensors, outside temp' sensor, sunlight sensor, modules etc?????
A quick guide to taking out a dash too if possible.

Hi Andrew if its climatic it may not be so bad, climatronic is supposed to be more difficult. Stan should be able to point you in the right direction,it will be great to have a/c in the end

Is it still gassed? You have to be very careful if it is as the stuff is nasty and can be only be recovered by an authorised person as it's a greenhouse gas.

I've been edging ahead with this as time allows.
I've changed the control panel to climatic, ordered the two extra sensors required,( but I didn't expect them to be €30 each!)
All parts are here, including new seals, new compressor oil, a new drier etc
I had the wiper motor out to fit an alarm siren, so took the opportunity to also fit the engine bay pipework, which went in surprisingly easy.(currently taped up and sealed from moisture)
Some wiring should come down both chassis legs, but access to drivers side is very hard to get to, so I've modified the AC engine loom, and all wiring will come down P/S
I stripped the donor loom and reduced it to a retrofit AC loom, I'm going to replace the battery tomorrow, so might take the opportunity to thread this loom through bulkhead grommet and into position, It'll be another job done.

What is the benefit of climatronic and can it be upgraded from a climatic system ?

Climatronic is a dual zone control and can regulate temperatures set by either passenger. It can be upgraded I'm in the process of doing this on my golf mk6 but it requires the dash out to achieve the end result as a new heater blower unit needs fitting with extra motors. As I've not seen them both side by side yet I cannot say if the motors themselves are retrofitable to an existing single zone unit perhaps doc can comment?

The climatronic airbox has extra internal ducts and baffles to operate the dual zone.
If i were doing the conversion and getting in that deep I'd go the whole way to climatronic. With that said, in a van with a solid bulkhead it's not going to create that different of a climate from one side to the other.

While it would be nice, finding a donor Caddy with climatronic would be hard, you cannot just upgrade what I have, new airbox etc is required.....
Apart from the extra sensors, and sundry parts, it didn't cost too much, apart from a half day removing...
My passenger seat is very seldom sat on. As Doc said, I'd also be sceptical how climatronic would be much benefit. I'm trying to think of the comedian, who had a routine on Aircon, how it was -5 on one side, and 25c on the other side of the car :)
