removing front struts
Just finding out that the front struts are a pig to remove. Got the drivers side nearly out but there just doesn't seem quite enough room to get it out. The strut is now loose in the cup on the hub.
I've removed everything bar the driveshaft from the hub, even the wishbone and now it seems like the driveshaft is at the maximum drop. Do I need to detach the driveshaft?

Re: removing front struts
You are best to compress the spring so as the strut it a little shorter.
Leave the top mount as high as possible until you have the strut out of the hub, it should come out without removing the drive shaft so long as you can get a bit of compression on the spring.

Re: removing front struts
Easiest way is to remove strut with hub that way you can insert a wedge to rear of hub to release strut. Pain in the arse trying to do it on the van

But yes at the point your at get someone to put they're foot on brake so you can undo the driveshaft nut.
I have in the past used a jack and a block of wood to push on the bottom of the spring seat but I haven't suggested that haha.
Nor do I advocate it,
Even if it did work a treat

Re: removing front struts
At last I got it off 30mins ago by using spring compressors. Only problem now is that I've stripped out the top of the strut piston with my torx driver trying to remove the top mount.
Does this mean that the entire strut is fecked now?

Re: removing front struts
OK so the shock is screwed. The top of the pistons are screwed and there is no way to torque them up properly after fitting new springs so looking at bilstein front shocks. Don't want adjustable maybe just shortened.
Does anyone know what the best to go for is?

Are you fitting lowering springs?

Re: removing front struts
Short shocks will make the ride a lot better and will have matched qualities to the new spring rate.
Good your doing it now as most people end up busting the shocks soon after anyway.
Can't advise on options I'm afraid as I always go straight to coilovers after previous spring debacles.
Bilstein is a good name of course

Euro car parts have 10% off on them at the moment so I'll need to order these tomorrow to get them Thursday. slightly over £300 for both.

Re: removing front struts
Tried to but it doesn't apply as there's already 10% off. At least it's £40 cheaper.
