problems starting in morning

Post by Rob35uk »

hi all I'm new to the caddy so don't know much about them so looking for some advise . i have a 2009 sdi caddy and in the morning it struggles to start if i turn the key on and off several times it will start . it seems to me that there is a draw back in the fuel line like its sucking in air . if i park it on a slope nose down it starts . has anyone had this issue and is this a common fault thank you ....rob.....

This is quite common. The seals in the injectors fail and allow fuel to run back to the tank. Turning the key on & off a few times or parking faced downhill is a solution, you can fit a check valve in the fuel lines too but the proper fix is to pull the injectors and fit new seals before they begin to rattle around and damage their sockets.

Hey Guys,

My Caddy has exactly the same issue and I have had a check valve fitted in the fuel line which made zero difference...

I'm guessing my van is past the stage of new seals... Is that the end for the engine? As you may be able to tell, I fix push bikes, not vans and dont have a clue! Glad I've come across somebody else with the same problem though as all my local garages were not aware of this being an issue.

Cheers

Which fuel line was the check valve fitted to, feed or return or both?

Might be worth having another fitted to the return.

Yours does start ok when you cycle the ignition a few times before cranking?

Just as a warning about the injector seals in case anyone else needs them. I have been waiting about 3 months now for a set for my 1.6. Parts guy said the back order is pretty horrific due to all the update recalls needing repair.

The only way mine will start from cold is if i turn the key in the ignition and keep the sucker there until she goes. Time it takes until she starts varies on the fuel level in the tank - the more fuel, the shorter the time.
quite the titter amongst the neighbours..

It really sounds like you have a different problem to the original post. The check valve is a solution for when you need to prime a few times before cranking. If priming doesn't work for you then you have another problem.

This topic is related to a 2009 SDI so probably won't have the same problem getting seals.
Have you tried a diesel injector specialist for the seals? There are loads of places other than VW where you can get the seals, it's only a O ring and copper crush washer.
Some on eBay at less that £10.

I've got the same issue in my sdi, is there anyway to test the seals before removal or is it a case of just doing them?

Just an update about the problems I have had with my Sdi...

Had new injector seals fitted a while ago and all was fine for a bit. However, problems re-occured and then it started blowing blue/grey smoke on start up and at low revs/short journeys. Have since been advised by a new vw specialist (who, so far, have been brilliant) who have advised me that Sdi cylinder heads are prone to warping which is what can cause the injector seals to fail repeatedly. So, I now need a new cylinder head, seals and possibly a new injector or two.... Before anyone says it could be the garage selling me up the river, they have never tried to sell me parts and have only pointed me in directions where I can source them so, has no real vested interest in rinsing me of money - other than labour of course.

Does anybody know of a decent, cheap supplier of these parts before I throw my trust to ebay and the like? My bastard caddy has already had a new engine (thats another story!) and I'm starting to think I should put a match to it so that it cant do any more damage to my wallet....!!

Cheers
