Rear seat conversion advice.

Post by dydod »

Hi all,

I have just bought a 2011 ex British gas maxi and was hoping to convert the rear by adding a second row of seats and installing windows to the sliding doors. I have subsequently bought some maxi life seats (2+1), including fixings and seat belts. (removed from a disabled conversion).

I was wondering if anybody knew of a garage/conversion specialist in the south/west wales area that could install the seats for me.

I have spoken to a local VW garage but they have limited experience in the area and believe that there are no points to mount the seatbelts to, that they would have to make some mounts and this would leave them not crash safe. I assuming this would result in them failing an MOT.

Thanks.

Seats on mine were done by these guys http://www.van-formers.co.uk/ came with a certificate of conformity, can't tell you the price as it was done by previous owner, all I can say is that they did a good job!
If you click on their photo page on fb and go nearly to the bottom of the page you'll see a white maxi pic next to a black T5 and it'll show conversion in more detail

Syrus automotive in Birmingham fitted the rear seats to mine, they did a great job, it's not straight forward job though. Involves removing a section of floor, welding in a box section to take the new seats and fitting seat belts etc. Cost just over £1000 but that was supplying all the bits and the center console seats etc. I couldn't find anyone local (Cardiff)who was prepared to take on the job. Syrus did it in one day while I waited.

Cheers,

I have contacted Sirus, they were really helpful. Did the sort the trim around the rear door step, which either gets cut up or replaced when the foot well panel is removed. Also is it worth getting the centre console done?

I booked mine in with Sirus today, to be done Friday 14th. The guy was very helpful. It's cost £1000 with just the seats being done, no centre console and I don't believe the floor is fully finished I.e carpeted. I was told the trims by the door would be sorted. I believed replaced with the caddy life trims.

The center console is worth doing, it provides air vents for the rear seats, and it's handy for the arm rest and storage, etc. I wish I'd had the rear carpets done too. The door steps are tidy enough, but I'll pop a picture on later to show you how it turns out.

You'll have a gap in the trim where the bulkhead comes out too, I cut the sides off the bulkhead and fitted them back in place to cover the gap. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than seeing the void that was left.

Mozzy,
I don't suppose you know the part number or the name of the trim piece on the sliding door sills, spoke to sirus and as they are fitting seats I've already purchased they can't provide the trim piece as they fit them as a whole package along with the seats. So I need to source it apparently it is available from vw. I have know idea what it is called.
Cheers.

Sorry, but it was all done as one job, I didn't get to see any of the part numbers. I'm sure someone on here will have the information though.

How much extra do they charge for the carpets and console with armrest?
