The 1.6 has problems with injectors, well documented on here. If buying one check the part number on top of the injector if it's 03L130 277 B allow 2k for there replacement, mainly 2011 and 2012 affected as the later vans with the same part number are better. If it's 03L 130 277 S on the injector they've already been replaced and will ok. Other than that both engines are equally as good in my opinion though I'd personally go for the 2.0 140 myself as I'd prefer to have the extra power and wouldn't want to have a remap. I have a 2.0 150 and my son has a 1.6 of which I've already replaced all the injectors after he broke down twice with a faulty injector each time.

Thanks for the reply and yes I think I agree with you about going for the 140bhp

The 2.0 seems pretty rare in the price range I am looking at.
You say that 2013 onwards are better. Are the issues fixed on these models?

Also, what sort of mileage are the 1.6 good for (should I avoid anything with more than 80k on the clock for example?)? I've read good things about the longevity of the 2.0 but not seen much on the 1.6.

Can't really say on what mileage a 1.6tdi is good for but as far as I know as long as it's regularly serviced I don't think there are any other issues to worry about other than the injectors.
The 2013 onwards 1.6tdi injectors while having the same part number I think from what people have said the insulation in the injector is better than 2011/12 injectors so don't get so many issues.
