um a drill bit :D sorry, start of with a small pilot hole, which is tricky because small drill bits are short so need to hang drill bit as far out of the chuck as you can, then you can drill pilot hole square, max size you could use is what i have which i believe was 8mm.
Erm, yes, I guess I was really asking whether you did it free-hand or with a press?

Mine broke without even being touched, haven’t been in the van for days and today it was broke. I’ve bodged a screw through for now and it’s working well, if it doesn’t hold up I’ll get a bolt long enough to go all the way through.

Complain to van-X and demand a replacement. If people don't, they won't fix the issue.

I've had 2 break on me , I think that's the average number as after the first two you get they no longer have any stock cause the are all snapping like wee twigs.

I've been through 2 or 3 at this point. Their (supposed) new design doesn't fix the issue at all (in fact they didn't change a thing). The only way to use these long term is to drill out the plastic and put in a metal piece.

Has someone got a pic of the bit that breaks?
Just about to buy one of these, just want to make sure I can fix it first

This is how junk they are. This one has never been used and it's almost ready to break (see red circled bit is bending, that piece eventually snaps off).

The fix involves drilling out the center plastic and replacing it with something metal. I've used "metal" epoxy to make the whole thing stable. It doesn't need to be pretty (you don't see this part), just strong.

If you have extras (I have 5 in total now!) you can experiment. Here's one I sprayed silver to match the "aluminium" interior bling

Yup, I just did one now (I have 2 silvers, one broke - keeping an unused silver and black for some reason). Took about 10 minutes. Waiting for the expoxy to dry. The next problem comes (this lid is really junk, but it's the only one for us RHD drivers) with the handle continually popping out of the lid once you've removed one or 2 handles.

I’m glad I’ve seen this thread.

I’ll keep my money and just get the dash top lid unit.

Thanks all for posting up.

I've just ordered another one. £16.99 delivered 3-4 days. And see if I can beef it up somehow

I just fitted a replacement handle last night. It looks like they’ve changed the central plastic pin to metal, which should fix the obvious weakness.
