Hi idle and rad fan comes on?

Post by Deanthedude1977 »

Hi all

Driving home today after bout 20 min on motorway takes junction off to head home.
Gets in a little bit of traffic and notice rpm has risen to just over 1000 rpm and can hear fan running,??

Got to safe spot to pull over and opened bonnet, sure enough fan running( mine only got 1 fan)
I turned lights on/off etc nothing would stop the high idle or fan so I turned van off and restarted..
All back to normal ??
I’ve read few bits n pieces before posting this and I’ve heard stories of new battteries to cleaning fuse box in engine bay and spraying with a water displacer such as gt-80 as moisture can get in box ??
They were mostly on older vw though..

Has anyone had similar and/or got a fix??

I’m looking at buying vag/com and will do a separate post about that when I kno a bit more about how it works etc..

Thanks

Are you sure it's not just doing a re-gen on the Dpf ?

What year is your van and engine size out of interest? But as said above it does sound very much like a dpf regen which will raise the revs during the dpf regen.

Some 1.9's have Dpf's, Euro5 became mandatory in 2009, all diesels had to have a dpf installed, especially by 2010,

Unless it's an "old stock " vehicle that's been unsold ? Just seems odd !!

I contacted vw and they said no dpf also mines. Euro 4 ..
I may just av to get it plugged in at vw specialist see what they say..
Even If I get vcds I’d not kno what I’m looking for..
Prob a sensor or summit simple maybe a battery , just been out in it now within 20 secs it done it so gave it a good 5 mile drive down motorway high revs and still doing , turn it off then back on and spot on.. I do a 60 mile daily round trip mostly motorway or a roads 60 mph plus so gets a good run 😁

I’ve read that too..
May av to get plugged in and hopefully sort, is the coolant sensor an easy change??
Or maybe worth getting the garage to do at time of diagnostics 👍

To add to post it only seems to happen whilst idling under load I.e lights on, heater etc,

I put a multimeter across it after a 3 hour standstill period and read 12v before starting and after starting was 14.4v...
Beginning to think maybe the battery as if I sit idling with no lights etc on the high idle and fan doesn’t kick in??
