"Specialist" servicing?

Post by Yarra »

Do forum members think that repairs, servicing and maintenance should be left to (often self-proclaimed) VW Specialists, or should any qualified mechanic have the wherewithal to do the job?

I personally wouldn't trust anyone but myself doing a service unless I know I could trust them or they have good feedback. I work at a dealership myself and some of the dodgy things that come from other branches are unreal. I know some technicians can't be bothered to fit something it gets thrown away especially when the manager wants every job done faster than the last. Also another thing I recon your car is taken better care if at a smaller we'll know garage than a dealership

Well firstly most general maintenance and servicing like lets say air, oil, fuel and pollen filters can be done by yourself. It is quite easy to do with the right tools and a basic mechanical knowledge. Changing the oil is straight forward enough. Done many oil changes on different vehicles on my driveway amongst other repairs / mods etc. It all depends on your own capability to how far you go before taking it to the garage. A good qualified mechanic should know how to do most jobs on various vehicles however this is not always the case. Try and find a recommended independent VW specialist before going to a main VW dealership if you can.

Thanks, folks,
Yes, i accept there are some simple maintenance tasks I could do myself. I prefer a professional to do it in the expectation that while they are at it they may notice things I may not; something sounding a bit wrong, something wearing unusually, an unusual seepage...
If there is not the need for special tools and diagnostic equipment then I might continue with my trusted independent local mechanic.
