Re: best 2.0 engine
Good question, I'd say the 2.0 CR CFJA, simply because it has 167 bhp, avoid 2.0 sdi like the plague

Apart from the 27 horses I dunno, I've got no experience with any of the 2 litre engines, I picked the CFJA cos it's the most powerful, and I'm guessing it only comes in the Sportline. A VW breakers local to me are breaking a 16 reg Sportline

I'm fairly certain VW dropped the Caddy Sportline in 2010.
2013 Caddy with EA888 Gen3 2.0TSI DSG, Superplus MSP19 , Caddy4 rear lights, Polo GTI (mk7 style) steering wheel, Relentless Tuning front coilovers, Audi A6 S-Line front seats, Boxster fronts & GTI rear Brakes, 3D Colour Premium dash cluster, Caddy life arm rest, Motexion bulkhead, MIB head unit

My apologies, it's a 2010 Sportline, the 16 reg they are breaking is a 2.0 tdi

Re: best 2.0 engine
According to Haynes, the CFJA 2 litre engine produces 125 kW @ 4200 rpm, this translates into 167 bhp. As I said, I ASSUMED (incorrectly) that this was the Sportline. As there is no more Sportline then I don't know, maybe Haynes have made a typo, if not there's a kick ass engine out there

Re: best 2.0 engine
On the standard Euro 5 models the CR 2.0 tdi 110PS engine is mechanically the same as the 170PS engine offered in Skoda superb models. The installed tuning map is the only real difference between these engines with the 140 models simply being supplied with a slightly more performance oriented tuning map.
Obviously tuning is not magic - if you want more power - it will almost always cost you more in fuel consumption unless the original vehicle tuning is way off for some reason.
So you might want to consider buying a 110 model and then getting it sensibly remapped by the likes of Pendle so it runs with a custom map based on those already being used on other VAG models. By staying within the normal envelope these engines were designed to operate in you should get a Caddy with noticeably improved performance whilst still remaining fuel efficient and reliable. Beyond 170PS more and more substantive hardware upgrades will be needed which will swiftly drill a hole in your wallet especially when you declare them to your insurer.
If you are thinking of the newer Euro 6 tdi engines I suggest you discuss your ideas with a specialist like Pendle as they will probably be the best to advise on reliability issues and explain what engines can be tweaked and how far.
