Bulkhead Removal - Safety Concerns?!

Post by jlaamweise »

Taken the bulkhead out my caddy, as the SWB is pretty useless for anything over 1800mm long. While I'm renovating the house, I'm constantly needing the extra length.

Anyone concerned about the safety implications of doing so though? Not sure I want anything flying into the back of my head in an accident!

Anything I can do? Other than having to strap things down all the time!

Other than a set of roof bars, which I don't want to do.

Answers on a postcard...

Cheers.

There are pretty obvious safety concerns without a bulkhead especially without a second row of seats. But you've got to make a choice. It could kill you in an accident.

They don't come with bulkheads here in Australia. They have cargo nets and wire dividers for those concerned about it.

I know some vans have a half bulkhead setup where the drivers side is the only one protected. Not sure if you can such a thing for the caddy. At least with a half bulkhead you can still put long items through the passenger side.

You can just remove half of the bulkhead. You just need trims for the passenger side if you want it looking oem.

That could be a good option. Any pictures of this set up?

Cheers

Louis Renault, founder of the French motor company, had a minor car accident which was perfectly survive able but his brief case hit him on the back of the neck and killed him instantly

I was concerned carrying my camping gear and at times drumkit in the car in case I had an accident, this was pretty much the only reason I bought a van.
Depend on what your carrying though, some lads I know cut a little hole in their bulkheads fit carrying 3m lengths of copper pipe.
You’re right to be worried about safety though, IMO.

You could just cut out the grille section on the passenger side to carry long stuff. This would keep heavier stuff low down out of the cabin.
I've got a bulkhead here that has a couple of small cutouts in it for this reason. Let me know if it would be of any use to you.

Cut the sides off my original grilled one when I didn't want a bulkhead at all...

Got fed up with the noise, so bought a solid one.

Love the lack of noise, but the load carrying is a PITA!

Plus my backs so shafted, I need to get the seat back more. Guess I'll just have to strap everything down each time!

Motexion bulkhead gives more legroom in the cabin than the standard Caddy one

Pretty sure you can remove half of the bulkhead. I have the same issue but I'm going to get roof racks instead as I like the lack of noise. I've had a van with a mesh bulkhead for work and the noise did my head in!

having a bulkhead also makes it warmer in the van and cooler with the ac,,,,easier to cool down smaller space
