18's vs 19's for a daily driver

Post by 3socksmorgan »

So I have got my new Caddy home (2014, Caddy Maxi, Highline) - obviously need to start thinking about Alloys :D thinking I'm going down the VW Clubsport route as I think they suit the colour (silver). I would add pictures, but haven't worked how to yet !!
Anyway... what are 19's like on a daily basis, I do 120+ miles a day and whilst I desire the looks, if 19's make the ride unbearable I'd rather go to 18's and have a little more comfort considering I use her everyday?

Thoughts (and any picks you might have..)

I have 19" on the caddy. Check tyre prices as I know 18" and 20" are cheaper in the band and model I prefer. If I were doing 100+ miles per day I would be fitting 18" and go for a taller side wall for a bit of comfort.

Minimal difference between 18 & 19's imo, apart from the bigger the wheel the better it looks. I'd wager that if the majority of drivers were put in a vehicle and asked to tell whether it was running 18 or 19" wheels, it'd be pure guess work.

Suspension plays a much bigger part in ride quality than the difference between 35, 40 or even 45 tyres. I had no issues with ride quality in my BMW running 35 profile tyres (from factory). These days it's pretty common for manufacturers to use 19" wheels on cars from factory with 35 profile tyres and modern cars aren't getting any more uncomfortable than vehicles from previous era's that's for sure.

For the record, my caddy is on 19's, is set fairly low on coilovers and I use it every day as a fully laden work van.

As barbel said 19s do look cool but really is very close to choose. I guess spend the money on the suspension.

Wheels clubsport i can get these brand new, but bear in mind that a good tyre gives a lot of comfort as well. Cheap Chinese tires Will be hard as.... just a good tire does a lot and 18 or 19” isn’t really a huge difference. 20” isn’t that bad either, but 30 isn’t comfy anymore 35 is much better.

Mines a daily & im running 19"Rs6 replicas on coilovers 2nd lowest setting.
Apart from some dodgy pot hole ridden roads the ride if fine,& i much prefer the look of 19" over 18".
Silver 1.6tdi,remapped, vmaxx coilovers, 19"Rs6 alloys,GTE leather seats
Weekend toy Audi RS4 saloon phantom black, Mrc stage 2 remap & manifold, cold air feed, full miltek system.
