Totally stumped by it.

So just to be clear...

Image

1. (30) Wiper power
2. (86) Reverse light
3. (87)Camera power
4. (85)Earth

There’s also a rouge power wire coming from the plug in of the video wire to the head unit? Does that need power? I’ve tried it and it’s not made it better or worse?
Image

The head unit has a can bus built in which is all the right settings to allow for the rear camera.

But regardless of all of the above I’m still getting this...Image

Run a temporary wire direct from the battery to the camera, if it clears then power source is the cause. If not then the power wiring is fine and the problem is elsewhere.

So I’ve just connected the camera directly to the battery and the image is the same... any other thoughts?

Do you have another camera with the same style of output that you can use to test?
Camera or video wire could be at fault.

In that case try plugging a camera direct into the head unit, there could be a problem with the video wire or the head unit itself, sounds like you've ruled out a camera or power fault.

Looks like an earth issue to me.

I'd be double checking your earth. Did you make a new earth point, splice into an existing earth wire or use an existing earth point?

Failing that as you have tried power direct from the battery I would agree the camera is probably at fault.

Earth to the chassis won’t do? I did try to use the Earth from the wiper but it didn’t make a different :-/

Earth to chassis should be fine. Did you remove the paint from the chassis?

Try removing the ground connection at the back door entirely. The headunit jack plug and the ground connection you've taken at the back door are quite possibly causing a ground loop.

Does the relay chatter when you have the engine running and engage reverse? Because of the power supply for the reverse lamp being dimmed, it may be momentarily dropping out the relay.

Just to add into this, I've just fitted the reverse camera (Chinese Ebay special), all worked fine after tapping power into the rear light block.
(Blue/Black = Power & Used brown for earth) then i read this and as soon as i started the engine the camera image flickers.

So not just you.
