Does my caddy have a 'SMART' Alternator???

Post by Calamity Kev »

Don't suppose anyone can tell me if the Euro 6 Diesel caddy's are fitted with a 'SMART' alternator?

If so, i've been reading that it's a bit more difficult / expensive to charge a eisure battery as the engine ECU is limts the voltage to the starter battery as a further means of reducing emissions / increasing mpg's.

If your caddy has Start/Stop technology or Bluemotion then it will have what many call a smart alternator. I'm guessing, being Euro6, yours has Start/Stop?

Your information is correct, you won't be able to use a normal relay to charge a leisure battery.

It's on my plans to do, and I'll need one of these instead:

A little more expensive but will work whereas the relay will not.

I've just ordered a Sterling power 30A DC2DC charger to do the job. seem to get decent reviews around the web.

Was it this one you went for

The BB1230?
Saw the 2nd hand clearance a bit cheaper.

Yes, BB1230. I bought mine new from 12Volt planet for £182. £149 seems decent if its just the box that's not pristine.
