Horrible start up noise

Post by BenF06 »

Hi
I have a vw caddy maxi 1.6

Hoping somone can help, I have had a horrible noise when I start up my van (a grinding/knocking noise) the same noise happens when I turn the van off. I had the RAC out and they recommend I needed a new flywheel, I have then had it in a garage with a new clutch and flywheel but this hasn't fixed the problem. Just wondered if anyone has had the same problem as it has already cost a lot of money and trying to avoid any more unnecessary cost?

It could be quite a few things, best get a local independent VW, Audi, Seat or Skoda specialist to look at it. Don't trust garages that change parts and hope that cures the problem.
If the RAC recommended that I needed a new flywheel and clutch I would not take that as gospel. And now you,ve got them done and there is no difference leads me to believe that the garage that fitted the flywheel and clutch also did not get to the actual route of the noise/problem and fitted them in the hope that that was what was up with it.
Keep us posted on the cause of the noise, you never know it could be something really simple but just sounds real bad upon start up or shut down.

Thanks for getting back to me
The garage I took it too, thinks it could possibly be the starter motor would anyone else agree?

Yes it did cross my mind that the starter motor could still be engaging with the flywheel but can't understand why you would have the noise on shut down as well, if the starter motor was partially engaging with the flywheel after start up surely you would hear the noise all the time or even intermittently.

Do you get the noise while cranking on the starter motor or only when the engine is started and running?

Exactly what I thought very strange that it still makes a noise when you shit it off, but there is a noise while the engine is running but not as loud as the start up noise and only when the engine is started and running the noise happens.
