BJB/BLS to ASZ SWAP

Post by Bumblebee58627 » Sun Sep 23, 2018 11:25 pm

So my motor threw a bearing... I have read the article on vwcaddy.com on how to do the swap.

I have a few questions that i couldn't find in any other forums.

Here is the question, if my van already has stage 1 tune on. Do i still need to map it for the ASZ? Or how does the tuning situation work?

I don't want to use the bjb injectors or turbo on the ASZ.

When you do a ARL/ASZ conversion in place of a BLS you have the option to keep your standard (BLS) turbo and injectors or use one or both from the replacement engine.
If you use your original parts your ECU map will be fine.
If you fit the parts from the replacement then you will need the injection/boost maps adjusted accordingly.

Thanks Doc.

So it's not just a tune?
Does it have to be adjusted with the vcd's?

Yes bjb and bls have a sensor mounted to rear of crank so any asz or arl will need the crank case modified

Also the cam pulley and cam position sensor will need to be swapped over, I had this trouble on the weekend put it all together and then had to take the timing belt back off to change the cam pulley over.

Thank You Aaron

I am doing all that this weekend. But I am stuck on driveshafts and gearbox mounting (the one on top of the gearbox, with the 3 hole)
Which driveshafts will work on the 6 speed conversion?
I've been reading mk5 driveshafts. Will any driveshafts from a mk5 6 speed work?

I may be wrong but the gearbox mount is probably the same as your BLS unit used, you might be unfortunate and have a two hole version in which case you'll need to get a three hole.

The standard from when mk4 6 speed gearboxes were a common but new popular retrofit on the Caddy2k, the mk4 6 speed shafts were used with the original caddy outer CV joint.
More recently, people have been using mk5 6 speed shafts which they say bolt straight in and are the correct lengths.

That's what the top of my gearbox looks like. How do i look for the code on the gearbox?

Will any 6 speed mk5 driveshafts work?
Are the splines for the hubs the same? Image

The flat surface facing up (left of the blue spot in your photo) should have the gearbox code stamped on it.
You are missing the mounting plate which goes between the gearbox and the chassis mount.
They do tend to crack so a new one from VW might be your safest option.

I've not used mk5 shafts but the hubs are all the same so splines will match.

Anyone on here completed the BLS to asz conversion?
I am looking for some more detail.
Any help would be appreciated.

BLS,BKC,BJB,ABQ has a crankshaft sensor in the clutch area ... ASZ has a sensor in the oil ... a sensor opening must be made to the engine block in the clutch compartment.Install the sensor sensor, replace the camshaft wheel with the sensor
