Caddyluv I’m just wondering if the nuckle joint at the bottom of the steering column may be freezing/ clunking !! Can you feel the clunk in the steering wheel ?

steering rack ?

you probably dont find it on the lift as there is less pressure on the suspension and rack when you turn the wheel

Just looking on youtube for any ideas and I found this clip. Its a lot more pronounced than yours but has the Caddy got any universal joints in the steering column you can reach to check?

If you skip forward to about 10mins into this clip you can see the UJ just moving where it needs tightening up.

This video has a clonk in a Passat and he says in the description it was his subframe that was "shifting".

And this one is for a Kia Soul and the clonk is sort of similar but interestingly the noise is coming from the steering rack where a nut has come loose (which you can see in the clip after)

Thanks dan.

Well just went to see if it would make a noise for me, and it’s being quite at the moment. That’s the strange thing that once it done 5 mins of driving it stops till the next morning.

Found this clip from a MKV Golf and they are saying the rack needed replacing.

im thinking the rack also as why else would the noise stop ? im assuming its got a hydraulic element to the rack and the fluid warms up after 5 mins of usage and it stops clunking

could be wayyy off with that guess but its all i can think of - if it was a mechanical part id expect it to continue throughout the day not stop

I spoke with a mechanic mate of mine and he agreed its unlikely to be UJs or anything mechanical as the sound going away when warm would be odd. He said, "If it is heat related that makes the noise go I'd say rack if it's hydraulic system. Or electronic steering column motor making the noise and as the motor warms up with use the slack is taken up."

He then went on to say, "But my money would say he needs to try the screwdriver trick* on the electronic column or rack if it is definitely heat related. I'd say any ujs, balljoints etc would be always there. Only other thing I've had (but I'd say it doesn't sound quite as harsh as that was more of a deeper knock) that was intermittent, was the sliding joint on the lower part of the column being dry. As the uj rotates the column lengthens and shortens when it's dry it makes a right noise."

*Screwdriver trick is "if you don't have stethoscope is use a long screwdriver put it on various items with your ear on the end of the handle the noise transmits up the metal. And you can hear it clearly."
