That's awful bad luck, I'm gonna say the cause has to be something else this time if it's gone this long and been ok.

Hi bud, I have had a read through your thread and have some similarities to what you have had. No error codes, metal flake in the filter, trouble starting. But when it’s running it runs smooth. Did you have any other signs?

Did they give you a courtesy car while you were off the road? I bought a multivan last year and the turbo shat itself on the way home from the dealer filling the dpf with fresh oil. It took me seven months to get a refund and am now the proud owner of a caddy. The caddys injector failed a week after delivery but was fixed the next day under warranty.

It just died in 5 seconds no warning whilst driving with one hell of a diesel clatter. Not sure if the flakes had built up over time. No flakes since though. Is yours lumpy when it starts when cold?

Hi Simon,

Found your post on my travels. I’m curious as to how your van is running now?

I’ve a 1.6tdi 102bhp 70k miles.

I had an MOT in December and failed on emissions, they said there was a fuel leak somewhere around injectors and replaced a hose and it got it through the mot. Rebooked for January to have it properly looked at.

Beginning of January took van back and had all injectors taken out and found a fuel leak around one of the injectors and reseated injectors and replaced seal/ o ring, which apparently fixed the issue. When I picked van up, it wasn’t driving well and was completely gutless (it was fine to drive the morning I took it in and not good when I picked it up). I called garage the next morning and said it was running correctly and they said to drive it for a few days and see if it got better which it didn’t.

Took back to garage about 1.5 weeks later and they agreed it was gutless and losing RPM. They checked EGR (fine) DPF and did a DPF regen (fine), Turbo (fine) but said it was still not running right. So they sent injectors off for testing and all failed on ‘under fueling’ caused by blockage from metal swarf.
They have since come to conclusion the high pressure fuel pump has failed and pushed swarf though the fuel system.

They are saying I need: new high pressure fuel pump, 4x new injectors and system flush through, but even after all this, it may not get rid of all swarf in the system and could lead to further problems down the line.

I’ve only owned the van a year and I had 2 injectors replaced within a few months of owning it.

I’ve just had a quote through for £3000 to do all the work 😪

I’ve asked them to put my old injectors back in and give me the van back so I can get a second opinion. I’m loathe to spend all this money if they’re saying it might not fix things.

I really don’t want to get rid of the van, I’ve been slowly turned into it into a camper and spent so much time and energy (and money) into it.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Tasha

Has your van had the emissions fix carried out by VW?

To be honest this is where I was, I decided to have the whole thing ripped out and go TFSI, their really wasn’t a huge difference in the cost. Significant at around 25% extra but I’ve ended up with a 2.0 TFSI with DSG and low miles..

Van all fixed in the end. Turned out that the garage damaged all 4 of my injectors when changing the seal and I questioned them to the point of admitting fault. They paid the whole cost of the bill and put in 4 new injectors, my fuel pump was never the problem at all! Put me through so much stress and worry but it all turned out right in the ens!

That’s a good result. It’s bad that the garage have put you though that stress, and also nearly had you spending lots of money you didn’t need to.
I’m assuming there was no swarf in the injectors after all?
