2l engine issue

Hey all
Got my van booked into the garage Tuesday, as i've an oil leak coming from the engine - nothing too serious, but a few spots on the driveway, so wanted to get it nipped in the bud. Guy at the garage had a quick look a few days ago and said no issues driving it - probably a gasket or something.

Anyway

Drove it a couple days ago, and heard a sudden 'psssht' noise with a little jolt - thought i had a sudden puncture, but tyres all good - felt like I'd driven over a can of coke or something... have no noticeable loss of power, but under engine braking there's a faint whistle sound. Not driven it since i got home after that.

Mate at work suggested a boost pipe or something having popped off, but wondering whether any of you lot have had this?

just ticked over 100k miles, it's a 2l 140bhp 2011 plate maxi kombi.

It could be a intercooler hose split, loose on a connection or totally come off. The oil spots could be relevant to that problem also as the intercooler hoses/pipes will have a little bit of oil in them from the crankcase breather. Hope its a cheap fix anyway mate for you.

Thanks mate - fingers crossed it won't be a big bill - got a mk1 needing a load of work too, and my coffee machine just died - expensive month

Well, turns out something in the box disintegrated taking the housing with it. New box time.

£2,800 - Ouch

I would be tempted to make a few calls for alternative quotes before committing to that quote!

As its a 2.0 I assume its a 6 speed manual? If so you might want to search on line for replacement gearboxes. At the moment on eBay there is a 6 speed for well under £400 after delivery is factored in.

I cannot but think there is bound to be a garage out there able to swap out the damaged gearbox for under £2,400.

Is that is a main dealer quote?

Then you might want to get a quote from an independent VW specialist garage - like Simon at Central VW/Audi in Ellesmere Port - even if you do not take the car to them for repair they know caddy's very well and can usually give you a fair quote - their hourly rate is a fair bit lower than dealers.

It may be worth checking your insurance/credit cards just in case they offer breakdown cover as I assume the Caddy will now need to be recovered to whoever is going to fix it and that can be a quite costly extra.

Thanks mate. TBH I've no idea how good a deal it is. Mates were suggesting a £4k bill wouldn't be off, so £2800 sounded reasonable. The quote is as follows;

£1300 + VAT for the gearbox (refurbished, with a 12 month warranty, from Gloucester Road Gearboxes in Bristol)
£250 + VAT for the casing

(total £1860 inc VAT)

5 hours labour (£330)
Clutch £156 (inc VAT)
Flywheel £288 (inc VAT)
Slave cylinder £48 (inc VAT)

Total £2882

The garage are a VW specialist, have been V good in the past too. They've suggested I look for a 'box also, but their quick look didn't come up with much - it's a LWR code box.

My other query is that the clutch and flywheel sound rather cheap to me!

I'd rather get the parts from a place I trust, but I also don't want to get stung - I'm gonna have a look around anyway!
