towbar wiring

Post by carsounds_dan » Sun Oct 11, 2009 6:56 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if the Caddy has a direct tow bar wiring output in the rear of the van?
I know some of the VW range does this, and I cannot find it shown on any autodata diagrams but there has got to be someone who knows off by heart.

Many Thanks

Daniel

I'm looking at fitting a tow bar but as most VW have a dedicated plug located in one of the quarter panels I thought I would ask to see if anyone had found a similar one on the caddy.

Hi Dan,
I think there is a special bus module for the tow bar electrics but it can work out very expensive.
The Dealers advised my mate to wire directly into the loom for his as that was the way they had done all the ones they were asked to fit.
Might just be an Irish solution, the UK price for the module is likely a lot less.

I've found this on ebay.de

Hi. I have just fitted a hidden towbar on my Caddy.
The cheapest way i found was to get one of these (all towbar shops will sell them)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/7-Way-Bypass-Rela ... 3ef9492794" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You need this because the Caddy2k has can-bus wiring so just wiring a towbar in the usual way would play havoc with the "bulb not working" warning light.
It comes with instructions and is easy to do. It does need a perminant live from the fusebox but the rest can be wired from behind the drivers side rear inner 1/4 trim. (you will have to feed a wire across to the lhr flasher lamp though.)
The main towbar cable then connects to the relay box.

I ordered the proper caddy wiring kit from VW and when it arrived it was over £100 and also needed hard wiring into the fusebox and an additional relay box so i sent it back to them ;)

I've sorted it now, I used autodatas pin outs, and used the original inputs onto my custom relay board under the passenger seat.
The relay box contains goodies like "wig-wag" flasher unit, runlock, jump starting points, splitcharging and now towbar wiring.

I've just brought the vw wiring kit and got a shock at all the cables.... in need of some advice..

1) ive brought a detachable witter towbar, will this be ok or do i need westfalia one? ive brought the adapted vw rear beam..
2) Do i need to run these cables and then get vw to plug in the vagcom to activate?
3) would it be better to use a 7 way bypass and does it throw up any faults? i heard that using the vw wiring changes the braking around when towing, ie sends more breaking pressure to the rear?

I didnt do it myself was done when i bought the van haven't fully tracked what was done but i do know for sure there is some sort of extra relaying in the rear of the van and it also has a beeper unit when their is a trailor connected. There is also a permanant live taken from the bus bar on the front of the fuse box inside the engine bay which seems to run back under the body ( Haven't looked at it fully as i'm a great believer in dont fix whats not broken and i'm also lazy :D )

Just had my towbar delivered today and thought I would check on here for information about fitting. It seems like I can not wire the electrics to the back light as I would have normally done.

Can I connect the cables into the existing wiring loom and put up with the lamp out indicator on the dash or do I have to buy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7Pin-Specific ... 35b3a3f7bf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or is there any other ways to do this??

Hold your hoses, type in ebay 7 way bypass relay. £15 and you can caravan crimp into cables behind the rear light. Mines done on drivers rear light n folded behind the jack etc. Instructions are good. So just comes down to u and a multimeter. Hope that helps

Have heard of trailer lights shorting out and passing back up through the van if ya only scotch lock em in, have a unit here where ya bring the constant live to then your signal wires, its designed that if a surge comes back from the trailer that the relay in it will collapse saving the van

Really? Sounds like a bit of an old wives tale that one. Risks have got to be minimal. 3 years strong mine

Brilliant, cheers gyus.

I thought I was going to have to fork out another £140 on top of the £113 already spent on the tow bar and I got a price from a company in Glasgow to supply and fit for £190 which is good.

:D :D :D :D
