Caddy Maxi Camper (hermitsrest)

Post by hermitsrest »

Yesterday I made my first purchase towards the camper (even though I haven't sourced a vehicle yet). I got a discounted but new poptop with bed boards (from conversion company) and also managed to source 3 passenger seats (from breakers). All with installation included. With some of the new Pop Top quotes coming in at £2100 + VAT for just the roof, I couldn't afford to pass on this offer, as it's fairly critical to my build and maximising space. As I'll be selling my existing car fairly sharpish after, getting the passenger seats now means I don't have to rush-buy when I get my van.

Just got the find the right van now ...

Flooring question: I want something hard-wearing and mop clean, as opposed to carpet. Any recommendations? Would you insulate underneath it?

There's plenty of rubber Matt options out there. I sound deadened mine underneath and made the world off difference.

Ahh nice I've got those. Pretty heavy but function great. Are you going to be fitting all this stuff yourself or getting a conversion company to do it?

Conversion company is doing the poptop & seats (in Devon) and I've roped in a friend who is willing to help me with insulation, walling, flooring, etc., who's done his own Renault Trafic out amazingly. All vehicle related engine stuff will be done by a VW Mechanic I know who is local to Worcester (as my engine knowledge is -100 on a scale of 1-10!). I'll probably do all the soft furnishings myself as I already make a lot of Viking kit and have made myself a camping mattress that I use in a tent, and it'll likely be very similar. Sourced the foam cheaply from Dunelm, and covered it with wool from a wool blanket. Probably would be harder if I was planning to do soft furnishings in vinyl or leather tho. All the core work I'm planning on doing is so that I can get the vehicle re-registered by the DVLA as a Motor Caravan, thereby getting cheaper insurance, ferry prices (if I go abroad), and a cheaper MOT.

Ahh sounds like good plans. I've looked into the registration myself but don't want any glass in the back.

Yeah it's just vehicle type you can't change isn't it? I've registered mine as a 5 seater but it's still a panel van.

Sorry I didn't mean to send that twice! Haha. I didn't know it would be cheaper insurance to be honest! Food for thought. Is the speed limit not the same as it's only a small van anyway? If not I'm very lucky!!

No the caddy life has same speed limits as a car but panel van is 10mph slower on certain roads.

Going to view a Caddy Maxi Life in Lancashire after the Jorvik Festival - very excited (about both things).
