My Black Caddy / MTB / Camper

Post by billymtb »

Hello, I am Billy from down in the South West and here is black 2005 VW Caddy. I brought this van back in 2009 to transport my mountain bike to the trails and it has been super reliable. Having recently just passing 100,000 miles I was in two minds to either upgrade or spend a bit of money tarting her up.

After spending a couple of months on this forum looking through lots of your inspiring builds by some really talented people I have decided I would have a go at my own build! Ideally I want a way of transporting my bike and maybe having some kind of bed in the back so I can sleep in the van for the odd night while away at mountain bike events to save a bit of cash on accomodation.

So the mods have started!! I have always like the Sportline version so managed to find some Sportline Wheels on ebay and had the front and rear bumpers colour coded along with the mirrors. Already looks much better!

Couple of quick upgrades today. The Van X Glove Box only took a couple of minutes to fit and also fitted some air vent ring surrounds.

Cheers, really happy with the wheels. Going to make a start ripping out the ply panels this weekend and the old floor.

Got all the ply panels out and the ply flooring which took alot longer than expected as alot of the screw heads were damaged. Building up the confidence to take out the bulk head today and start cleaning up!

The bulkhead is out! Feels a little weird after it being in there for the last 6 years but feel like I have so much space now :)

It will be colder and a bit more noise but yeah It opens it up a lot. I would suggest cutting bulkhead also if you want the pillars covered... Keeping an eye on this build as I have a caddy for the bike also that I'm building out.

Looks like I'm on a similar build journey as yourself. What are your plans for the bed? Got some ideas but looking for further inspiration.

Cheers

It certainly does, felt a little wierd to drive today but I am sure I will get use to it. Cheers for tip on the cutting the bulkhead down, had seen a few people on this forum had already done that so will have to give it a go next weekend.

Welcome. Loving the improvements to your van.

Where in the South West are you based? And what bike do you ride?

Had my first attempt at carpeting out the back of the van today and pretty happy with the results so far. Also started to layout the wood battons which will allow to have something to fix my plans for the bed, storage boxes and bike mounts too. Plan on laying some sound deadening and insulation between the battons.

I have a few ideas in my head, just need to try them out first. I am only going to build a single bed, but ideally still be able to fit two bikes in and have some storage for kit, with hopefully a bike wash hooked up to leisure battery. Going to have to be creative with such a small space :)
