My £500 sdi

Post by Mk2kompressor »

Thought I'd start a build thread of my own, £500 fishing caddy Image
Plans are:
Service (fuel filter bolts look untouched for years!)
Fix the rough idle (hopefully the above fixes)
Fit a non leaking radiator and new fan as the original has fallen off Image
Spend days and days cleaning all the interior plastics.
Soundproof/board/carpet and install some gadgets as it is as basic as can be.
Maybe go for a colour change after I've done the bodywork (just boring clean nothing special)

This sort of colour

Or just primer grey the whole thing

After work today I removed the battery tray as it needs a new gearbox mount, found a loose vac pipe floating around!
Goes to the valve above the inlet manifold and was kinked closed.
I'm sure it's the egr valve?
Maybe that's part of the rough idle

All for £70!

Bonus £4.50 found whilst removing it all
Today will again be spent cleaning the above and trying to service it

Service done, haven't seen oil that bad or a fuel filter that bad in a long time!
Managed to find a radiator fan setup (twin one) so new rad tomorrow.
Found the lower subframe engine mount is on its last legs so ordering a poly insert for it (looks a bastard to change!)

Must remember to get the rear carpet and the rest of the armrest parts Image

Seats need cleaning some more later so seat covers hiding the grot

Got to install the radiator later and she's good for a few tip runs Image

Well, today hasn't gone as well as I hoped!
The fan was the wrong type so I went hunting for another option, drove 2hrs to Peterborough and back to collect the correct fan and rad assembly (£50)
Rushed home to fit it, removed the bumper and it turns out the lower part of the front panel is in 5 pieces!
Held together by the bumper isn't good lol
Whole front panel required

Fitting in with the budget build, I've just sourced a cheap mechless touchscreen with rear view camera.
This has my brain going as it has an extra av input, I also have a home theatre shuttle pc laying around along with a few other gizmos including a mini projector lol
That's for another time though.
For now the rad is finally in and getting warm but still no fan kicking in

Installed a new radio surround for my cheapo screen, put some injector cleaner in it and ran it to the shops

Just been driving it the last few days to work the treatment in, only 3x 5 mile trips and already feels like it has a smoother throttle response!

On another note, phase 2 of operation cut the bulkheads is in full swing (excuse the grass, my gardeners are on holiday)
