Part two of the clutch replacement.

Got a phone call nice and early to say my flywheel is done, it’s skimmed and refaced so perfectly flat now. He showed me how it wasn’t massively warped but had worn unevenly.

Image

Amount taken off is tiny, talking thousandth of millimetres but it looks percect and felt super smooth now.

And then of course the new clutch fitted to that as expected.

Image

I always take a picture of the clocks when I do big jobs to keep track of mileage and dates. Just so happens it was a little milestone for mileage.

Image

Anyway, the results!
Wow... I’ve never had a clutch pedal lighter than a throttle pedal before!
Can easily opporate it with your hand, I was almost worried it was fitted wrong or somthing but it’s just taking a little getting used to. Oh and the clutch judder has totally gone now and the gearbox mount is still holding fine. :)

Mixed emotions currently.
The misfire fault seems to have basically cleared up, not sure if it’s somthing to do with the clutch and flywheel etc or somthing different....

It used to misfire / judder once the coolant gauge started to move so around 45° but since doing the clutch & flywheel it’s never done it...

Happy but anoyyed since I can’t pin point it and thinking when the weather gets worse it might reappear. Anyway, another effort has been made to clear it (even though it seems fine now?? )

Image

Remap time!!
Not expecting much in the way of power gains but they are de-tuned from the factory (exact same spec and engine in mk5 golf is 75bhp beside the caddy 69bhp) so can be pushed to almost 90bhp but a realistic 80bhp without pushing or straining anything, I’ll test and update with results as the week goes on.

Few updates.

The vacume box valve was buzzing slightly so replaced that with a brand new one from vw. Easy enough to swap over. No humming noise anymore so that’s somthing els done.

Image

Also sorted the remap file from earlier and got that onto the van. I heard mixed reviews about remapping the SDI, some people said zero difference but loads of smoke so I had low expectations from it but I’m pleased to say i went with it now.

The power from around 2,000 onwards is much improved. 2,500rpm then foot the floor the pickup is much faster and smoother, pulls harder up the rev range so overtaking is better now and 5th gear seems so much more usable than before. I do get some smoke but on a remapped vehicle it’s minimal and only for a short amount of time when flat out full throttle coming to redline, no worse than most standard diesels probably!
Power is between 80 / 90bhp now so need to dyno it to find out exactly what it’s running. EGR was reduced and hot start issue was applied also since it can only help things :D

Image

Finally I sold the lights I made for my own van but still had the original 3 pod version so made another set similar to replace them with when removing the current set, happy days!

Image

Oh and a small update. Customer of mine is being featured in a magazine so wanted some stickers on his car, we measured the ends of the spoiler and got some 6” vinyl cut with my logo on. 7 year warranty they said! Couldn’t resist one on my own van to test them out.

No updated for a few weeks, been letting the money build back up since I’m expecting a few big bills again

As I may have mentioned previously the only wheels I want are 16” steel wheels. I’ve been looking for ages for a good set but they are all stupid money since people keep them for winter wheels or they are 100 year old with bad tyres.

So.... I managed to get my hands on 4 brand new ones from a VW garage, complete with stickers fresh out the factory! They come wrapped in brand new continental tyres as expected.

Ready for fitting
Image

The nice new stickers
Image

Didn’t really take a fitted picture
So a quick one from the window.
Image

It’s a million times better now, the 16” fills the wheel arch’s much better.

As for the other big bills. MOT is due in a weeks time so will be gettting it done Monday / Tuesday. The minute I hear the MOT has been passed I’m phoning the gearbox specialist and getting the gearbox rebuilt with different ratios fitted. Wanted it done before now but when I went to get it done the owner booked a month on holiday so been waiting for him to return. ££££

MOT time, nice new Bosch aero flat blade wipers fitted and a new registration plate bulb fitted and all is well :D
I may have removed the reg bulb when fitting the reverse camera and forgot to put it back in  but yeah, it passed with flying colours, no advisories.

Image

I’m sure most of you are sick of the engine updates but I managed to get my hands on two virtually brand new injectors so thought I’d fit them with the other reconditioned one I fitted recently, for no reason other than they are a lot newer than mine.
Fitted with new seal kits and all new bolts, not to be touched again for a long time.

Nice a shiney, can still see the part numbers on it.

Started a little bit of progress on the whole “mini camper” things made a bed / seats / storage to keep everything organised.

Fitted it with a few brackets so a few screws and the whole thing lifts out. It’s made so the top lifts off in two sections so nice and easy to work with. Cut a little bit of sponge for now but will carpet it and do it properly in the not so distant future

Cleaned up the engine bay a little bit. Ordered the proper engine cover for my caddy, a few of the brackets and other bits and pieces needed to fit it

Split the cover and gave it a good clean up.

Some of the brackets used

And all fitted :D

I also had a few sheets of Silent coat left over from doing the rear of the van so sound deadened the bonnet at the same time for maximum improvement!

Not a massive update. Infact i douted myself for even buying this upgrade. I didn’t expect much from it at all other than I wanted the gear knob to look abit more modern than the standard plastic ball they come with so ordered a Mk7 Golf one.

Image

Not a direct fit, had to mess around with the leather for a little bit but fitted and looks better now. I noticed a great improvement soon as I pulled off the driveway though! Feels much nicer to use and would recommend it to everyone :)

Dropped the Caddy off at Tyneside House VW specialist Monday morning with the brand spanking new gear ratios (£180 they cost since you asked) for them to pull the gearbox out and take it to a specialist to recondition with all new bearings and seals then fit the new ratio gears.

Obviously got van sick without it so borrowed another van and went on a 200 mile trip for these.... little teaser! Good updates soon

As I said earlier in the week they’re a good find bud. Once they are in and the box is back in I’ll have to pop over

Yeah, it’ll be good to see it from someone else’s point of view since I drive it everyday I don’t notice much difference but from someone els that drives the same van, you Might think it’s totellt transformed :)

As you said earlier though....
I’ve checked the seats and got the correct modules, already fitted the correct heater panel with heated seats ages ago with the climatic so I literally just need the wiring harnsss and the seats will be plug and play operational.

Done about 12 hours work on the Caddy this weekend. I fitted a Touran dashboard but didn’t have the correct heater vents to aim the air properly so decided to sort it now while the weathers nice rather than waiting until winter sets in to find my blowers don’t de-mist the windscreen...

So full interior and dashboard removed, all panels and carpets out. All carpets were wet vaced so are nice and clean again. All panels were wiped over with magic sponges and then treated correctly with autoglym interior plastic and rubber coating.

While everything was out, seat belts were swapped over.
Image

Half way done.
Image

And with thanks to mid England retrims they were all stitched correctly and safely!
