Caddy Rouge

Post by btaylor2k »

Doing a lot of bits to the caddy.
It's my first van and want to use it for work (I'm a carpenter) camping, fishing, mountain biking & bmx
Need lots of storage for tools and bikes etc.
Dads heavily in to modified VW's so although it's my first project, he and his mates in Kerbside Kustoms know what they are doing :

Started life fairly good looking (well in the sellers pics, not so great up close)

The van was a bit battered from a company life so we planned on doing small patches but then we got carried away and went for full modifications

Wanted to get rid of the side moulding, rear wiper hole, indicators and smooth the front bumper.

We had to weld up all the holes in side doors, inlay a strip on the one panel where the moulding dipped in to the body of the van, weld up the rear wiper and indicator holes, only small skim of filler used for a better result

Got a touran to use for parts off another mate, so putting on wing mirrors with indicators in them and interior.

Got a vmaxx extreme kit for Ronnie (RKD designs) and a set of Bola B1 alloys
These are a few pics so far..

Plenty of hours later, body work was getting there...

Now time for paint.......
Yes it's a barn with a home made booth, but it's churned out some front magazine cover vans as dads mates alway fully colour sand after paint to get that super flat shine Image

We got most of the van colour sanded yesterday (14-4-18) but still more time and effort to be spent, but really happy with how it's going so far

Many more hours later did the last of the colour sanding, then first stage of machine polish

Now ready to assemble it all, then it will have a couple more machine polishes with very fine compound and finally a few coats of HD wax, but that's a way off yet

Thanks for the comments guys

Smoothing the sides isn't simple, the natural body lines roll in to that old plastic trim line, so you gotta feather it all out

Been a lot of hours of body work but we are well happy so far.

Still much more to come

Gotta get the Touran wing mirrors sorts soon as need to get the indicators working on them. Few bits to mess about with over the next week, like re assembling the inner door panels as i took all that apart ready for some touran electric window versions but funds are running low :(
But have managed to get some R Line black cupra seats with red stitching so they will look great.

Been playing about with the interior over the last week
Got it insulated with cellotex boards stuck in and filled around with expanding fire foam, it feels solid and definitely gonna be warm. On a short drive it's MUCH quieter too
Cut the ply then used fibreglass filler to loose all the hard edges and blend in to some of the tricky areas.

Carpet time..... 4 way mega stretch for the best results
Took the doors off to carpet them, gone right to the edges, I know the carpet is past the rubber seals, but the doors were battered and we did the same on dads T5 and that has no problem with water ingress 8 years later so gonna try it on this, if it doesn't work, will do it again.
Left access panels in the sides and carpeted over them, if we need to I can cut them out.
