Have you lowered the rear?
Have you checked the drop links and ARB bushes for "play"

If you have lowered the rear, you might have a problem with the shocks.

The van isnt lowered. No i havent checked anything yet apart from bouncing on the back and any loose ply lining.
I will check underneath at the weekend. Is there any special way of checking bushes...

Get a bar or something to lever them with.
If you can make the rubber bushes move or compress then they need changing.

Jack and wheel really tight. Now that ive listened a bit more tonight it seems to be suspension related. Surely it shouldnt be like this after 18,000 miles

Get it up on ramps, must be something loose if it's only done 18000, I don't think bushes wear that fast !!

is the exhaust on its hangers?

is it not under warranty? book it in at the dealers and let them figure it out if so.

Its not the exhaust or hangers. Ive shook the living daylights out of and not a squeek or rattle to be heard

Possible dry brushes on the shackles? My old Jeep Cherokee did it from them bushes, took forever to find the cause - or as suggested rear arb links?

If you think it's outside, get a go pro camera under it while driving, seen that done and it's brilliant

Ok guys just a quick update. Had my van to vw again with this noise. 3 hours later I get a phone call to tell me the technician can't find the noise and he is saying its the ply lining.
So by now this is really getting on my wick so ive jacked up the van and removed the rear dampers one at a time then test drove it. Did the drivers side first but still the same..... then the passenger side and the noise has gone.
Vw had it in total for 8 hours and it took a forklift driver from durham 20 mins
