Retrofit adaptive cruise control - possible?

Post by somacose »

Is it possible to retrofit adaptive radar cruise control as featured on certain new MK4 caddys to a MK3 highline caddy with the bog standard stalk controlled cruise control?.

If so then what items would be needed and what sort of expense?, stupidly expensive or outrageously expensive? :D

I think it should be possible. On a facelift you'd have to replace the stalks. The radar module only has 4 wires, plus, earth and CAN HIGH, CAN LOW.

However, on a prefacelift, you'd have to replace the steering colum as well.

Not sure about coding of your ECU though, maybe some others know about that.

It is possible, MartyPL fitted it on his Caddy I believe. Spacewalker definitely has retrofitted it on his 2005 Touran.
He had to change his stalks as he had the older version.
I think you need support in ECU and ABS.

Damn....sounds like it is "relatively" simple/easy to do without the need to sell a kidney for funds, I'll probe the mind of my relatively local VW geek and take it from there.

Many thanks peeps, appreciated.

If you look on ebay for VW adaptive cruise it brings up a few parts for Golfs and Passats which gives a clue as to what might need to be changed. On top of the stalks, there's a camera (the radar) that goes in the grill, an ecu which controls it all (possibly done on the slip ring in the Caddy) and the ABS pump. There's also a harness to connect to the gauge cluster but not sure if thats possible on the Caddy. Whether the Caddy version is as complicated as a Passat for example I don't know. What was a surprise was the price of the parts isn't insane, well secondhand ones anyway! ECU can be bought for £100 although brand new they're £800, if its the slip ring then about the same price. ABS pump looks like its about £100 as well. When I get etka up and running again (problem updating means I can't open it) I'll look for some part numbers.

I looked to add it as an extra on the Caddy I've got coming in April but you can't select it without MFSW & Satnav, neither of which I wanted so it became an expensive option.

Cheers dan, that'd be a great help, I'd prob go to the extra expense of fitting a suitable mfsw at the same time - i used to have a copy of etka years ago when i was messing about with my corrado's/scirocco's and mk2's, may enquire through a mate if i can "borrow" his copy

Bits I've found on etka so far:

2K5 907 561 B - control unit with software for distance regulation and radar sensor £400

That looks like it includes - 2K5 998 561 repair set radar sensor

7E0 614 517 L BEF - ABS unit with control unit filled and vented £1600

£2k....Eeeek! , Hmm - I guess i'll have to rely on 2nd hand parts if i decide to go down that route.

That 7E0 number could be handy as that's likely to be a universal part fitted to more than one VAG vehicle. I'll keep my eye on this thread if there are other parts people tell us about and as etka back up and running I can look them up.

keep in mind these units need adaptation on a vehicle and not a lot of places have the equipment to do it.

Hi, any update on this. I can only find Caddy Life with Std. Cruise on the MFS. Really like to have Adaptive CC.

Has anybody managed to retrofit?

I already have normal cruise control + radar with front assist and emergency braking, but no ACC. Is it just matter of fitting suitable steering wheels and activating ACC or anything else required?

Hi,
Saw a thread on a T4 site that said it needed a new brain thingy and the button, and then some re-coding ...
Need someone who has done it to get the lowdown methinks.
