Engine Upgrade

Post by Chris VWarren »

Hi guys, my names Chris and its a pleasure to be here. This is my fist time using a forum so bare with me.
Down to business.
Iv just purchased a 2004 1.9 sdi, engine moddle BDJ, and I am looking to upgrade to a new engine as soon as possible. I'm currently far too sluggish and she barely pulls her own weight over 50mph. I was looking at a BKD 2.0 tdi from a 2008 Golf, but I spoke to a VW repair shop and they said it may not match up without huge complications. They suggested trying forums to get some Info.
If any one is able to give me a breakdown of parts I would need to successfully see this through I would be really grateful.
I'm looking at this as a bit of a project and i want to get things moving immediately. I'm not expecting this to be cheap as I'm sure there will be a lot of replacements needed, but I'm not looking to go super high spec either. I just want it to be good solid nice looking van and to have some headroom under my foot should I need it. 130-15bhp ish is fine. (but if its easy to go higher then that's also fine.) 😉
The van it's self is black and already has a nice set of rims. I'm looking to do the suspension too, as well as some tasteful body work but really wanted to get her sorted out where it counts first before worrying about cosmetics.
So any suggestions welcome, who to buy parts from what garages you would recommend, and a list of the basics just to get it swapped over would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi mate. I’m new and I’m the same situation so hopefully a bit of info will make its way along here shortly. Good luck!

Hi Chris I feel your pain brother mines the same all show and no go. I'm new to the forum too but there's a lot of talk on here about remapping of the ecu so may be worth looking into that.

Hey guys, glad to hear I'm not alone in the slow department.
Thinking of getting a pd150 from 2002 golf to put in my 04 caddy but I'm not sure what things I will need to replace. Maybe I'm better off buying a complete car and just transfering all the moving parts over. Anyone know about this?
Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction soon.
I'm the meantime here is a photo of my work in progress.. Image

Nice caddy
Personally I would not get a pd150, I had one and it suffered from the notorious cam shaft problem and had to have a rebuild
I would buy a complete pd130 car and swap everything over and sell on the remaining to recoup the cost of the conversion

Thanks, was going to buy a complete pd150 car and do it like that. Where is the best place for insurance after an engine swap? Any ideas.
Wonder why the pd150 gave you the cam shaft problems. Are you running a pd130 now?

I bought a mk4 pd150, if you google it they are notorious for chocolate camshaft
After it was replaced it felt slower and less mpg
Soon after it was sold
I am running the standard engine
But I am looking out for a pd115 complete car for the conversion into mine

Thanks for the advice. Might start off with a remap then just to see how that goes as the Insurance on a non Standard engine is crippling.
This whole thing is such a mine field, it seems the more I learn the less i understand. Good fun though but going to burn a hole in my pocket.

ive been running a pd150 from a mk4 golf in mine for a couple years now.
going from the sdi to 1.9tdi is a dodle you only need to wire in the n75 and map sensor and the rest of the loom is the same

to go to a bkd is a lot more work as there is more wiring involved, there are a few companys that do it but if you send me a message i can send you the wiring diagrams if you like

atm im using a bls ecu with a pd150 engine with a gtb2260 running over 200bhp
