Strange clunky noise in the morning.

Post by Caddyluv »

So I have had this noise for a little while, initially I thought it was the drop links or suspension. So I’ve changed those and initially I thought it sorted it out. It only happens as I move. I’m now guessing the breaks sticking because it’s happening only once through the day. Or could it have anything to do with drive shaft or anything like that I can check. It’s not loud. It’s 100% coming from the front and it only happens as I move. Any common faults.

So recently the top mounts have been replaced, drop links, front suspension.

It’s 2016 caddy 4. Do i need to replace anything else??

Thanks.

So definitely not the breaks so it’s definitely something to do with the drive. Any ideas or solutions guys. Struggling here.

It’s not a stay bar or a engine mounting? Does it do it when you take load when the clutch is just biting?

Nope it only happens when I turn the steering wheel. Over the last few days I’ve been trying to rule bits out. I know it silly but I wanted to rule out the breaks. So I put a light film on the disk so it didn’t rust. Still happen. So the next day didn’t touch the wheel put it in reverse no noise. Touched the wheel, and knock. So it’s defo to do with the steering but I don’t know what is needing to be replaced. The van is parked outside all day every day. I’ve done 44,000 miles in a caddy 4 it’s 3 years old in February.

Sounds very much like the subframe clunk that a lot of VW owners experience.
Did you check the subframe bolts were all tight when you changed the struts?

I got Jamie to check everything he is quite anal about all this stuff there was nothing he could visually see. I assume it’s safe for a week or so. I can get back on the ramp next week. Thanks.

I've had some like that before.
My problem was the locking bolt of the wheelbearing/cv joint.

Was it the Audi subframe bolts that where the upgrade? I also think there is some shim/washers to put in as well.

could be ball joint or even the wishbone bushes. if its same style front hubs and arms are previous gen caddy then you could fit passat alloy hubs and wishbones and poly bush the wishbone.
