Help with an odd rattle.

Post by GunnerMTB »

Can someone help me diagnose this odd rattle please?

The rally van has started with a strange little rattle that only happens when cruising on a motorway at a constant speed around 60-70 . The rattle comes in for about 10 seconds and then disappears again, it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side behind the dash.

When the rattle starts it doesn't change with revs.

I've done about 300 miles today and it's done it around 5 times that I've noticed.

There are no other rattles or problems, the van drives lovely, no clutch problems or rattles at idle etc.

Bit confused as to what it could be?

Cheers

It sounds like a heat shield rattle but it seems to last for a consistent 10 seconds (ish) so I'm not sure.

Do you have climate control?. Could be something like a damper motor making the noise when controlling the temp.

Yeah I do have single zone climate actually, you might be onto something there. It seems to have no effect on the van and doesn't respond to throttle input or pressing the clutch in etc.

My recirculating flap motor makes a rattling noise when in auto, hacks me off. And VW aren’t interested in fixing it as it’s not broken.

Any chance of posting that link again please? It doesn't seem to work. What's the recirculating flap when it's at home?

One of these 2 links should work, just navigate to the appropriate model then what part you need to look at. If not I will post a screen shot later.
