Aircon/econ

So what's the difference between aircon /econ or is it because the aircon has climate control and econ is just on and off??

I had this on my old A6 and it puzzled me also. If I remember rightly, I read in my manual that ECON stands for economy.....ie ECON on = AC off and visa versa.
I’m open to correction on this though.

As I understand it:

"Aircon" setting will let the aircon compressor run permanently when switch on.
"Econ" is economy mode and when you come to a stop (stop sign, stop light, stop and go traffic) it will switch the aircon compressor off. So there will be a fluctuation in air temperature coming out the vents because it will be switching on and off the whole time.

Ok so my next question is it easy to convert it to climate control ? I'm asking this because I can only seem to find econ systems to fit go my caddy but would like to run climate control?
