Caddy DSG Gearbox Swap 104bhp gearbox- 170DSG gearbox
I want to swap a 6 Speed DSG from my 104bhp 1.9TDI engine, and replace it with a 6 Speed DSG from the 2.0TDI 170bhp as it is much higher geared. Problem is I have heard that the 170 DSG box may have a larger input shaft. Have checked the flywheel part numbers and they are different on the 2.0TDI engine from the 1.9TDI engine.
Does anyone know if the 2.0TDI flywheels will bolt up to the 1.9TDI cranks?

I wouldn't of thought they would fit, I'm sure the gearbox is completly different aswell on the 1.9s and 2.0s

The 1.9TDI manuals are 5 speed and the 2.0TDI manuals are 6 Spd, but that is the conversion that everyone is already doing.

But the boxes they are using are 6 speed 1.9 gttdi boxes so there the same, the 2 litre and 1.9 boxes and completly different shape and won't fit

Re: Caddy DSG Gearbox Swap 104bhp gearbox- 170DSG gearbox
With all this nice weather have finally had the chance to have a mess about with the caddy.
Pulled out the 104DSG box and compared to the 170DSG box.

They look pretty much identical! Loom plug looks the same, as well as driveshaft flanges etc. Input shafts, flywheel splines all the same!
Old (knackerd) 104 DSG flywheel on 104 1.9 engine

New 170DSG flywheel on 104 1.9 engine

Flywheels look very similar. Splines, bolt holes for crank all match up. The only difference we could find was it was 4mm thicker around the outside edge, (where the internal springs are) but not in the centre. Am guessing this is because the springs are bigger for the extra power of the 170. The 1.9 and 2.0 flywheels have different part numbers, this is the only difference I could see.

170DSG box is 1.9TDI caddy!

Filled it up with oil as per filling instructions. That was it.... It just worked! No VAG com, no adaptions required. I was expecting to need to do some kind of adaptions with VAG com but it was totally plug and play.
Drives so much better! 5th gear is the 170 box i think is actually a little higher than 6th was in the caddy. But once you get into 6th in the 170 box... how quiet. 70mph at 2100rpm, rather than 3000rpm.... mmmm On the old private road.. 100mph is 3000rpm

Ended up getting it for £400 of the bay. Took a while before one came up for sensible money.Evs wrote:Great work. Looks sweet. How much you pick the gearbox ip for?

Even a 140bhp 2.0 should be ok might do the conversion to mine if I keep it as it tops out at 115!

Can't believe the ecu for the box runs the 170 box, I know it's the same principle but some of these electrics are too clever for their own good. Glad it works, ill know how to fix my mates 105 TDI golf when it goes!
