Noise when turning at slow speeds
Hi all,
So as the title suggest I’m getting a noise when turning at low speeds, worse when turning left than right but still there. It doesn’t seem to be there at higher speeds. I’ve had two mechanics look at it and check Barings etc, all bearings are fine and it’s just had new discs and pads all round. It’s a 2016 caddy maxi btw, I’ve even taken it back under warranty and he said just get on with it and turn the radio up so I thought I could just deal with it but it’s driving me nuts.
I’m just wondering if anyone’s experienced similar and found the issue? I’ve tried searching the forum but can’t seem to find anything related.
Anyone who’s had similar would love to hear if you found the issue
Thanks in advance!

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Is it something you’re getting when you’re on, or close to full lock? If so, and it’s left and right it could well be your bottom pulley that drives the auxiliary belt. Another thing to check is your CV joints, though it’s doubtful they’d both go at once

You don't describe the noise but further to the above also check your springs are seated properly and in one piece.

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Hiya thanks for your replies
Sorry I meant to describe the sound! So the closest thing I can describe it as is as though the wheels are rubbing the arches (they aren’t though it’s on standard wheels and tyres and there’s plenty of room in the arches) it’s a sort of rubbing sound like there’s friction somewhere. I can sort of feel it in the wheel as I turn.
Initially i thought it was full lock as the first time it happened I was using full lock, however it’s not it’s making the noise just turning a corner
I’m sure the mechanic said the cv joints had been done when he had a look. Everyone who’s checked just says crack on with it until it gets worse but I can’t leave it anymore
@the swan feind I will try and check the pulley out thanks for that
@scoobysrt the springs look spot on but will definitely give them another look over

Check your dust shields are still straight and not been bent into your disc.
You don't just crack on with it when somthing is rubbing, find a new mechanic.

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
If it was the bottom pulley, you’d know about it mate, it would rumble and bang away on full lock.
As Scooby said, you’ve had duff advice off your mechanic there, always better fixing a small problem in case it becomes a big (and expensive) one.

Check strut top bearings too buddy as a precaution

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
What is the condition of your disks and pads? I have experienced rubbing noises in the past from rusty or heavily lipped discs, from memory after lockdown, which were exacerbated when cornering. I'd also echo Scoobysrt's advice re the brake disk back plates.

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Cheers for the replies I do appreciate it
So the discs and pads are new all round, fitted around a month ago, the noise was there before the new brakes though and we though they may be the issue as the fronts were quite heavily lipped, he said he checked the covers too and they’re fine.
I’ve not checked the strut top bearings so that could be next. However the noise is constant, so if I hold the wheel at a certain amount of lock there’s a constant rubbing noise, and if it was them wouldn’t it stop once I reached a certain lock? I’m not sure just a thought

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
It's normally the uj on uour drive draft but if you've had that checked the next thing is wheel bearings.
You can check wheel bearings by jacking the van up each side at a time, block it up so you're not on the jack then holding the wheel top and bottom and then side to side your wobble the wheel and feel for any play.
As well has the shock tops uou then need to check the bushes then check if the anti roll bar has moved in its mounting points.
Where are you based?

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Early wheel bearing wear is usually only noticeable at speed - often quiet when driving straight ahead, but giving a definite hum when turning the steering wheel slightly to the left or right, likely more in one direction, depending on whether the left or right wheel bearing is the culprit.
Later on, you may detect a rumble when spinning the wheel by hand. Play in the wheel bearing is only usually noticeable once the bearing is heavily worn - by that time the bearing would likely be making a horrendous noise in normal driving.

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Once again thanks for the replies
So two separate garages have checked the wheel bearings and both said they’re fine, and neither can pin point the noise. They’ve lubricators stuff they thought may have been causing the issue but no luck.
I’m thinking they’ve had it up on the ramp though and I think the van may need to be under load for the noise to occur. I’m not sure though it’s just so frustrating that I’ve been in two “vw specialist” garages and not getting any answers.
@scoobysrt I’m in Manchester mate

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
Just a thought, the CV joint boots themselves normally make a slight rubbing sound when the driveshafts rotate with the steering turned towatds full lock - just the friction within the rubber itself. This would usually not be obvious except when manouvreing at low speeds with the windows open.

Re: Noise when turning at slow speeds
i'd have to agree with startline, i had a cv joint boot replaced a couple of months ago, and it sounded like grinding when turning at low speeds but when up to speed there was no noise.
