jinxed caddy
i wonder if luck will come 3rd time round,
A week ago i thought id treat the caddy to remap, after a few runs on the RR it was time for a road test, giving the right pedal a tickle and bang goes the turbo, not happy to say the least. 2 days later fit a recon 150hp turbo to it, remove egr and cat.
Yesterday i took the van back for a remap and delete egr from ecu, while on RR the chap mapping it says its not making much boost, 2 hours later after trying eveything possible we decide to take the intake pipe off the turbo, to our suprise the impeller has no vanes/fins left on it WTF how come?. after further investigation we find a nut that holds the impeller to the shaft in the intake hose.
So now im having to get the turbo rebuilt and hopfully might get it back on the rollers this weekend fingers crossed.

Re: jinxed caddy
Who reconned the Turbo? Its sounds like that nut wasn't tightened properly or it was over tightened? that nut is reverse thread lefty tighten righty loosen as opposed to lefty loosen, righty tighten but I am sure someone rebuilding turbos would know that, and it should be a lock nut plus a dab of locktight for good measure.. I reckon the nut got loose and minced the impelor, which would indicate the turbo wasn't rebuilt properly or wasn't rebuilt at all and was on its way out when you bought it? Either way I wouldn't be happy, if you paid good money for a reputable turbo specialist to rebuild it or bought it from them as a rebuilt turbo? You should have a case for a new/replacement turbo and possibly a few quid towards any other damaged caused plus labour, could take a solictors letter though but I would contact them first..
As for the Vanes being minced, well the "spare" metal had to go somewhere and more than likely into your intake as far as the cylinders which ain't good either, might need to pull the head off too..
Also as the van was getting remapped at the time the place you got your turbo from might have a case saying the remap cause the failure, so might be best not to mention that..
Sorry to sound so negative, hopefully some of the above may help you and hope it gets sorted without too much hassle and cost..

Agree with the above, i'd be worried about where those metal bits went. Hopefully you will have her sorted soon.

Re: jinxed caddy
I would also change the oil lines to and from the turbo too, well the oil return at least, which may have been the problem in the first place, I reckon your first turbo went due to oil starvation due to a blocked oil return line, its a common enough problem on VW turbo's, seen it in 20v Turbo's a few times, but all oil lines should be checked when replacing a turbo on any car.. It wouldn't have been the problem with this turbo as oil starvation will mess up your turbos seals and your van would be blowing a fair bit of smoke before getting to the stage of mincing the vanes..

Right here goes 3rd time round
turbo rebuilt, every possible pipe and intercooler cleaned, fresh oil and filters, what could go wrong this time
Remap in the morning
As for the old compressor wheel it was missing all the vanes, i found most of it in the pipes they were turned to dust but luckily i dont think much if any made it into the engine, if it did well the engine runs fine.

Re: jinxed caddy
Got the van back on the road yesterday and had it remapped to what a standard 150hp golf is and it produced 160bhp and 231ft/lb of torque, going to leave it like this till i get a hard pipe kit for it then get it mapped again. The chap doing the map says he can easily get another 30hp and get it near 300ft/lb. It goes well now.

Re: jinxed caddy
Is that 160bhp from a 1.9TDi? the 104 bhp one? What other mods you got?
What turbo you put in? Standard? It might have been a good idea to put an upgraded turbo in when you were replacing the blown one, if you looking more power that is..
And is that extra 30bhp from a downpipe? 190bhp sounds like a lot from a downpipe and map, 190bhp sounds nice but I would be worried about the extra strain on the engine, clutch and flywheel..
Anyhow glad she back on the road, I say she is a flyer with 160 bhp.. 6speed box next on the list?

Re: jinxed caddy
Have you got a dyno sheet? i'd be interested to see how the torque holds out with the bigger turbo. Standard 1.9 injectors?

Re: jinxed caddy
yes m8 was a straight ish swap, had to make an exhaust downpipe and flange and the egr pipe dosent quite reach so thats why i removed the egr valve and had it deleted off the ecu.
Didnt get the print out as i didnt see the point cus im having it remapped again when ive fitted a hard pipe kit, which should be in the next 3 weeks or so.
Just needed it back on the road after all the problems i had with it.
We only ran it once on the rollers and thats what it produced so next time we will tweek it some.
