Snowed in
Is it better to put the steelies on rather than the 18's in the snow and ice? Anybody run snow tires?

Re: Snowed in
snow tyres or not I would rather be running steelies in this weather... all that salt doesn't agree with alloys very much (wash it orf as soon as you can)05657873 wrote:Is it better to put the steelies on rather than the 18's in the snow and ice? Anybody run snow tires?

Re: Snowed in
yes you will have an advantage running on steelies. they are narrower thus cutting through the snow and not floating ontop.
I am on snow tyres on my golf at the moment and it's not even thought about getting stuck anywhere they are very good but certainly not the be all and end all of driving on snow there is still a limitation just higher

Re: Snowed in
I can't comment on what's best of steel-rims and alloys, but narrower tires are better if there's a lot of snow (according to Petter Solberg); they "plow" through the snow rather than floating on top of it (as already mentioned).
Wider tires, like those 18" you have, are better in the summer, giving better grip on the road when accelerating and breaking.
My wheels atm. are 15" stock VW steel-rims, and 195/65 Lappi 260 stud tyres all around. Up until yesterday I used Michelin X-ice studless on 15" alloys, but as the extreme cold (~-35C) have gone (now around -5C),
and the condintions have become more slippery, I figured it was about time to add some studs to the car.
