Strange noise

Hi have an ex BG van 2011 1.6TDI 27k - only got it 2 weeks ago - drives great and looks to be in very good condition, but....I can hear this persistent noise when idling (only really hear it from inside van and slightly louder in passenger footwell). Have looked for ages on net to find out about it but only found the exact same noise on this clip of a SEAT and there is no explanation

Anyone got the same, know what it is/could be ?

meant to say it stays the same if I increase the revs, use clutch, put on fan etc. have tried all controls in the cabin

That is a strange noise, it sounds like an old steam beam engine. If you can hear it more on the passenger side of the vehicle in the foot well area then I guess at the engine side of the bulkhead is where the transmission is. I can't think of anything else that would cause the noise.
It could possibly be something in the bell housing like the flywheel or clutch parts rubbing. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

I think it sounds more like a herd of Wildebeest farting up the wrong end of a trombone

If you heard it you'd know, sounds a bit like a whining VW diff

Ok, I've followed the link now, what a tit! So this is stood still at idle? I'm clutching at straws here but the dpf is also in that vicinity, could it be clogged and unable to regenerate automatically? In which case forced regeneration is the next step, just a thought.
