Upgrade steering wheel for Mk4

Post by Savaloy »

Hi all,

I’ve been thinking about swapping out the steering wheel with the golf R steering wheel with the controls.
What would be the process behind the swap? Is it a plug and play unit or is coding and wiring modification involved?

Many thanks
Ben

Depends which caddy you have and which options. Polo and scirocco is plug and play. Golf can be different and coding will be nessesary in that case if cruise buttons are on the steeringwheel for example.

If you want to swap the parts as well with the handles and slipring you have to code if it even would start to work in the end. Perhaps you need more to change in that case.

I have a trendline, was with mfsteeringwheel from factory, polo R line steeringwheel works directly besides the cruise buttons on the left. Still use the handle. Can change it from the handle to the buttons with getting it coded.

Thanks for the reply dude,

I have a 2015 2.0 TDI caddy if that helps any, it has cruise control and also a kenwood aftermarket DAB radio so would I be able to use the steering wheel controls with these or would coding be needed?

A mk7 golf R wheel with cruise on the buttons will not work without an additional aftermarket module, there’s a member on here ( spacewalker ) that makes and sells them
Then you’d need to replace the indicator stalk for a plain non cruise stalk

To get an aftermarket stereo working you’d need the relevant controller no matter what steering wheel you went for
Connects2 sell the modules for aftermarket stereos

@Savaloy, mine is a mk4 10-2015 2.0 CR euro5 140hp with custom remapping. More powerful than the euro6 150hp custom remapped.

Be aware that fully loaded Golf 7 models are with different modules and bmc! Like in the previous post has been written a spacewalker module will be needed to get it the easiest way working.
A mate knows how to get it working but he does it on a daily base here in the Netherlands, but he will not tell others how he does it. He earns his money with this kind of mods.

Sounds like you have the same van as me matey :)

Thank you for that gents I’ll have a little look for the module that controls the stereo.
Just wondering though is it essential that a non cruise control stork is required?

Thanks for the replies fellas

Have got this one, but as well the buttons can be changed. Two are half loose in my case so found others.

Upgrade steering wheel for Mk4

Will make some photos tomorrow, can’t find between the 26.000 photos on my phone so fast a photo of my interior. So thought a that lawnmower has a steeringwheel as well hahaha (got exported to Poland in the meantime).

@r1lea the cruise on the handle still works as well in your case? I know if mine gets cruise working on the buttons it’s not working anymore via the handle. Or you changed in your caddy the handle?

Rk, to get cruise working on the wheel, it goes through the spacewalker module and bypasses the oem steering module
No the cruise on the stalk will no longer work after

I’ve changed my stalks to the mk7 golf stalks
