Lights

Post by XTX »

I am not sure if my van lights are correct...
When I start the van the front driving lights come on, even if the light switch is in the off position, no tail lights,
Turn the driving the lights, the driving lights come on (but much dimmer than the previous scenario) and tail lights,
Turn on the main lights, the driving lights turn off, the headlights come on and the tail lights come on.

In my mind the driving lights should be dim when the van is on and the light switch is off, then the driving lights should be brighter when I turn the light switch to driving mode. I find it odd that the lights are brighter when the switch is in the off position.

It is a 2011 ex-BG Maxi.

Hi mate. Yes that sounds correct what you’ve described there. My ex BG van is exactly the same and apart from bulbs. My lights are un modified

That is the correct behaviour. That lighting mode is called "Daytime Running Lights" (DRL). There is a stalk combination to turn them off, or if you have VCDS and a MFD, there is an 'inhibition' you can disable to give you the option to turn them on and off via the MFD settings. It's safer to have them turned on, but there are times (mostly when camping) that I turn them off.

The "stalk combination" to turn them on and off is:

"With the car turned off, and the headlight switch in the "0" position, push down on the turn signal switch and pull it forward (kind of like flashing your high beams while trying to turn left). Hold that position while you turn the key to the on position (don't start the car). Keep everything in that position for about 3 seconds. Turn ignition off and release your turn signal lever. DRL's are off. To turn back on, do the same thing, but go up on the turn signal lever instead, still pulling for the high beams."

From VWForum for a Golf 5, but I tested it on Caddy before doing the VCDS edit that puts the DRL setting into the MFD.

There is also an option to have DRL's off with handbrake on, I have this done on mine. Can be enabled with VCDS.

Nice! I didn't come across that. Do you remember the wording?

Don't remember the exact wording, but it's pretty obvious once you see it. I'll grab a laptop and check it for you.

Thanks! That's pretty obvious.

I guess I didn't know I wanted it until you posted about it, having gotten settled into the manual on/off whenever I go camping... :P

Thanks everyone, reassuring it is set up properly, even if it seems backwards to me.

I am happy to have the DRL on, just thought it would be better if they were brighter when you actually turned the lights on (first position on the switch).

There are two different lights. On the first 0 position are DRL which are bright. When you turn to second position, it`s a parking/position lights, those are`nt so bright as DRL. There is two way bulb, same as rear brake/position light I think, 5W for position and 21W for DRL
