Interior light switch

Post by gazza31112 »

Me again!!!, Iv carpeted my headliner and put some switched spotlights in, they work fine, but they are not connected to the original light circuit.

I will need one to come on when I unlock and open the door, then go off after a short pause like the standard light, my plan was to put another spotlight were the standard light is, but I just cant seem to wire it up so it comes on with opening the doors then goes off after a while, it just stays on forever, is it a combination of the 3 wires on the original plug, or something inside the standard light unit that makes them switch off after a while?
Would there be anyway of connecting the 2 black and red from a 12v spotlight to the original 3 wires to make it act as the standard light????
There's a brown, red, and blue on the standard

Thanks guys
.

You can hook up on original wires with adding a switchImage

Hi mate, if this works I swear you have saved my day lol, by on-off-on does that make it a 3 way switch? Or a 2,
Iv brought a 3 way today cause I assumed that's the same way the standard works?

Yes it's 3 way switch with OFF in the middle. In this way you can have the light On, completely Off, or On with open door. Same as per factory setup.

Yes, it's just a switch. It doe's not understand whether you switching positive or negative feed :)
It's exactly how it's done inside original light.

When the switch is flipped to the left or right, the light should come on.
Also lock/unlock the wan or switch ignition on/off. If you have it unlocked for a long time it goes to sleep to save battery and most of the power supply is shut off.

That's bizarre... The way you described it, you should be shorting +12V to the ground when open the door.

Hiya mate, replaced my switch today, and I'm getting some light.
So I assume my switch was faulty, but again I'm not getting what I should???

I'll attach pics of every connection Iv made and if you could have a look and see if it's all ok, if it is f**k knows what's going on lol
One side of the switch turns light on, while the other side turns it on very dimmed, obviously middle is off, but again it does not turn off, with ignition or opening or closing doors, it just constantly stays on, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!!!?????

White wires are the spotlight + & -
Blue wires are extensions to the van wiring which I will label the colours

As it stands I have the van standard Red wire going straight to the + of the spotlight
(no connection to switch)
Just noticed it's a red+blue wire (will that make a difference?)
(See picture 1)

Spotlight - going to the centre of the switch (labelled on the switch as power)

Blue standard van wire going to switch marked acc1 (on2)
Switching switch to this setting turns spotlight on fully
(See picture 2)

Van standard brown wire to switch marked acc2 (on1)
Switching switch to this setting turns light on but very dull
(See picture 3)

Switching switch to centre (off setting) turns all lights off (obviouslyImage)
(Picture 4)

From what I can work out, that is what your drawing says?

As I said I can get light, but light on any setting makes no difference when I unlock, or open door?

I want the spotlight to function like the standard light does, (not switched) just to turn on when I unlock the van, or open door, then go off after a pause, like the standard light will on the door setting
I have switched spotlights (which work!) For when I need light.

It's driving me insane!!!! Please help!!!!

Does your cabin light work ok?
If all of your crimp connections are ok and the switch is fully functional, this should work.
Have you tried to plug the original light back in, just to check that nothing is blown?

I stupidly broke my standard light trying to get it out, so as it stands that might be my only option of getting another one and seeing how that acts.

I blew loads of fuses trying every combination of wires before I asked you, so fuse is ok, Rear interior lights work fine (same spotlights) and on same fuse I think? So if they work the cabin lights should also work?

I dunno man lol

So this is for your cabin headliner, not the rear headliner if I understand correctly? Shouldn't be any difference, I think they are on the same circuit.
What is your full setup of the lights?

Don't know if you have a multimeter and can or know how to measure things. At the moment it looks like your blue wire is not doing what it should. You can use only Red and Blue wires and connect them directly to your light just for test purposes. In this way light should only come when unlocking the van, opening the door, etc. and go off when lock the van or turn the ignition on, etc...
