Really need advice on 6 speed conversion!!

Post by Danpitman5 »

Hi there, new to the forum, I'm hoping there is somebody on here well educated about the 6 speed conversion! I recently brought a caddy which has had the conversion, 130bhp egr delete etc... I'm struggling to shift the gears correctly, 1st gear you need to kind of push down as if you're going into reverse, and also the gear stick doesnt naturally spring back to central when coming out of gear if that makes sense? Clearly the person who had it before me has missed a part, I'm just hoping somebody can enlighten me on what needs doing to correct this?

Many thanks
Dan

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum.
It truly does sound like someone has missed the finishing touches of any gearbox fitting.
You'll need to get the selector mechanism ends adjusted correctly to bring all into alignment correctly. Have you any VW specialist nearby, it's something they'll have done after changing a clutch so they should breeze through it.

The problem usually with the stick not springing back to centre is the mechanism ontop of the box i found on my last 2 6 speed boxs one a mk4 golf and on my current caddy 6 speed conversion

put you gearstick in the neutral postion then if you unclip the cable ends and move lever back an forth this should move the selector up and down if this is sticking when you let go and not springing back up take the arm of the gearbox you will see where it pivots and it will have the same clip as the gearbox cables take it off take the plastic bushes out be carfull the can be brittle clean the hole out where the bushes insert and the pin also apply genours amount of grease and work the arm back forth making sure it springs back up on its own

I would take a look at that as its a simple easy fix and maybe contributing to you not going in gear correctly

Awesome! Thanks for your suggestions, I'll be able to put that across to my mechanic now and get it sorted, I was worried it would be a huge job, but by the sounds of things its could he something relatively easy :)
