@the chippy a golf gti engine swap is probably the better option as you will get more bhp there are quite a few people on here the have gone for this option.

@J_Con you would need a remap if you fitted a bigger turbo so I have been told.

At the moment I’m going for a hybrid turbo upgraded in my 1.6. so I will let you know what the out come is.

@Sean1066. Keeping a close eye on your progress here mate. I'm looking at this modification too. Am I right so far that you've bought a 2.0tdi turbo & provided the part number but you've sent away to turn into hybrid but darkside have said they use a different turbo part number that they themselves modify?
Is it not possible to swap out the 1.6 turbo for the 2.0 & then have it mapped without any additional modifying?

@the colourpurple I bought a 2.0 tdi turbo and sent it off to be turned in to a hybrid. There are 2 reasons I did this 1st I wasn’t 100% it was a good working turbo as I bought it 2nd hand from eBay and it cost me £140. 2nd I wanted a bit more power.

As for darkside I didn’t contact them to find out I think someone else contacted. Darkside offer a turbo at 175bhp.

I believe it is possible to swap out the 1.6 turbo for the 2.0 and then have it mapped.
This is what I’m attempting to do to mine (I’m not saying this is what you should do)
Genuine VW CR170 turbo (turned in to a hybrid)
Airtec intercooler
DPF and EGR delete alone with a remap
I’m hoping to get between 200-240 bhp

@sean1066 thanks bud, which engine would be a straight swap or easiest fit? Mine is a late 2010 facelift model 1.6tdi.

@chippy
i think the only engine swap would be the same engine to what you have.
anything else would need rewiring But your probably better off asking someone that has done an engine swap

Good info thanks mate.

I might go the easy option to start with and see where to go from there if I get bored with the power

With the turbo upgrade, are you changing injectors/exhaust/intercooler too?

Has anyone carried this out successfully?

Replacing 1.6 CAYD engine in my Caddy at the moment after an oil pump failure. Seems a good opportunity to fit an MYP gearbox and a CR170 turbo. Having been reading up, the CR170 turbo (785448) is directly compatible with my engine but the actuator from my original 1.6 turbo unit needs swapping onto the 170 turbo unit. Aside from this the only other change I can see is that the braided oil return pipe requires modification; from anyone's experience it seems the one from the 170 engine is required, is this correct? I.e if i use the CR170 return pipe, is the connection compatible to my 1.6 engine?

I see this as a good opportunity as i've already had the DPF gutted but not mapped out as of yet - I live in close proximity to Narco in Coventry so figured with an easy turbo upgrade upon engine replacement I could get this mapped along with DPF disable. I know they're renowned for PD engines, anyone on here used them?

Thanks

@fallan
When I did mine I bought one of theses from darkside

I also modified my original return pipe.
I bought an airtec intercooler and you will need a custom remap. From what I can remember I got 194bhp out of my 1.6.
My turbo was a hybrid cr170.
If you need any more information have a look through my build thread.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I read through you're very detailed thread (van looks mint!)

I saw you'd made reference to an issue when mapping ref the actuator - was this because you used the original actuator from the 170 turbo? (I was of the impression that you have to swap over and retain the original 1.6 one onto the turbo.

I saw Darkside sell that feed - that's a standard fitment feed for the 1.9/2.0 - surely thats the same as buying an OE one from a VW dealership or motor factors? (i.e its standard?)

It's the return that I was unsure about... What exactly did you modify? Was it your original 1.6 turbo oil feed that you modded or?

@fallan
From what I can remember the 1.6 turbo the feed and return go in and out next to each other on the same plate that bolts on to the turbo. If you cut the feed flush with the fixing plate you can use the hole as the bolt hole for the the return.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the pic! I have found a 'new' standard 785448 (CR170) turbo.

So the image you attached above is the 1.9/2.0 feed, DS offer one for the 1.6/2.0 (oval port) which I think is the one that you probably bought?

When you trimmed down the pipe off the plate in your picture above, did you just use the standard bolt back into it ok? No leaks? Was there a copper washer you used?

Sorry for all the questions, trying to get all the parts in prep so it can all be done in one swoop!

Many thanks.

Turbo turned up today

Bought a brand-new, boxed Garrett GTC1549V (785448) for a good price - cheaper than buying an eBay refurbished unit actually - think I just fell lucky with a generous eBay seller.

Ordered the braided feed from Darkside yesterday.

My attention now turns to the actuator part - I’m aware that it needs to have the one from the standard 1.6 turbo swapped on it. What is the process for doing this? Obviously it unbolts from the inside of the hot side of the turbo, does it need paint marking for its original position? I can’t see any visible threads on the actuator on the new unit. Did they just swap yours over Sean with no grief?

The last thing I want is to get it all built up and running for it to have to come off again lol
