Clutch cylinder leaking

Post by Barrington »

Clutch cylinder leaking. Clutch pedal just flapping about not engaging gears. I've been told it's internal and gearbox needs to be removed. Does anyone know what's involved and a rough timescale.

Thanks all

The clutch master cylinder is a common failure point on all VWs of our generation. You might be lucky and it's just that.
Otherwise, and it seems you've already had it diagnosed as the slave cylinder, but that is in a different position on the three or four manual gearboxes normally fitted to Caddys, without knowing what you've got it's difficult to advise. Most of them are external so no need to remove the gearbox.
Have you a visible leak? Where from?

Hi doc,

It's a 2011 1.6 TDI. No visible leaking but I was told it was that as the brake fluid had gone right down aswel.

My 2011 1.6 TDi (CAYD) had an external slave cylinder which is much easier to replace than an internal one as it's on top of the gearbox rather than inside it.

If it is internal it's pretty much the same job as replacing the clutch/flywheel so if you do need it doing I would think about replacing those at the same time if they're towards the end of their life.

I can't help with costs as I do my own but getting the gearbox out is a horrible job, I prefer to take the whole engine out!
