Clutch gone

Post by irvind »

Hi all,

Sitting waiting on the RAC after the clutch went bang and now the pedal is stuck to the floor.

Expensive?

Interestingly I just pulled the pedal out and it still has resistance but will wait for the specialist’s opinion before moving.

I had a similar problem with mine where my clutch went to the floor and when pulled up it still worked for a while until one day it stayed down and never came back up.

Ended up being the master cylinder which failed.

Get them to check the brake fluid if you haven't already. The garage I took it to said that the brake and clutch fluid run off one fluid.
Not sure if it will help but good luck and hope its not too bad.

Sounds like the master or slave cylinder. Not expensive...

The reason there’s still resistance is because not enough hydraulic fluid has been pumped out through the split. It will give up soon...

Hopefully for you it's the slave cylinder, compared to the other massive unreliability issues: this 1 is a bum fart. had the same failure myself. yet another VW part that isn't u to everyday use....

I meant to update this sooner, but the master and slave were replaced.
2 drops into my route after picking it up, a spring fell off into the OSF footwell. The garage quickly refitted that and all was well until today when the clutch failed again, becoming progressively reluctant to return fully, then just stuck to the floor.

What will it be this time?

Oh, the EGR was replaced too.

There may be air in the system, this is often a problem after any work on that system and can cause the pedal to drop to the floor.
The fact the spring fell out of the clutch pedal doesn't give much confidence in the repair.

Make sure the brake fluid is fully topped up as the fluid is fed from the back of there.

So this got very interesting:

Garage confirmed one of the parts they had fitted had failed, also recommended clutch replacement which I authorised.

They ordered clutch but wrong one turned up.
Further examination revealed that the wrong flywheel was fitted, and possibly a replacement engine, though I would query this as the van is ex RSPCA and there is a full service printout, no mention of engine replacement.

Garage reckon some odd parts were fitted at assembly, just when Bluemotion was being added to these vans.
So it’s a crossover van.

Did the garage elaborate on the wrong flywheel being fitted? Is it not something that was ever fitted on a caddy or just not what they were expecting to see when they took the gearbox off?

Not particularly, other than that the first clutch that arrived didn’t fit what was on the van.
I think they also said the engine code is different to what it should be.

Ooof, that's concerning.
Sounds fishy that the engine is not the same as that registered with DVLA.
