Caddy for rally and work

Post by JeffJam31 »

Hi all,

Haven’t been here long, been quiet sifting through what I could find on the forum to not post previously answered questions.

I’ve got the facelift 1.6l 102 that I will still use as my daily. I’m keeping the 1.6 to be able to get into the 1600s groups.
I upgraded the wheels to 16” to be able to fit better tires (while keeping ride quality and tire prices to correct standards)
I’ve looked “briefly” into a rear axle swap to custom fit some tarmac suspension, still looking for parts that’s will let me load up my shop in the back.
I’m currently designing the rollcage and sourcing some “comfy” bucket seats (like the ones in the rs6 cause they’re pretty :D )

I guess what I’m going to have to do next is get the engine up to spec. I don’t want to do just the remap, even if that would be the easiest to start getting on the road, because I’d end up changing parts anyways.

So:

-brakes that actually stop the van cause right now it’s no good (better brake lines might be a cheap fix early on)
-turbo that lags less. (Can’t see myself fitting a supercharger)
-air intake might be a custom fab job, if you’ve got references I’m open to suggestions
-intercooler, I’ve heard people putting the airtec, wondering if that’s good enough
-I’d really like to tweak the steering cause it’s a bit.... yeah.
-I’d like to keep the ride height a high as possible due to the shitty roads in the south of France.

Then it’s mudflaps, light bars and the fun stuff like stickers that make it go faster! I’ll still be decking the boot in removable shelving and whatnot for my tools, once again if anyone has fitted out their work van I’d be glad to discuss.

I’m open to all questions, concerns, and advice, especially for engine mods cause I’ve only worked on motorcycles and I’m not crazy enough to put a turbo on a bike lol but I’m pretty shitty in electrical as well.
I am a welder by trade so I guess if anyone needs plans, or parts I’d be able to help a fellow forum member.

Here’s a photo with the wheels.

Ride height is slightly higher, that’s nice. Still needs better dampening, everything I find is for lowering which I don’t want. Or worth more than I care to spend for the moment.

I’ve been getting weird feedback in tight cornering. I’ll get the geometry checked and we’ll see afterwards.

New brakes coming up soon. Staying on stock calipers for now, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it right?

Planning is still in progress.

I’m moving further away from the original plan of keeping things simple.

The more I learn the more I want to change everything. I probably won’t end up racing with it but it could be a decent recce and mobile garage (it’s got all my tools anyways)

I need to work on the steering, I don’t know where I want it yet but right now it’s not good enough. If anything this build will end up being a GTI. But that’s still VERY good in my book.

I need help though. Would you rather keep the leaf springs and just get a new pack for a different spring rate and an adjustable gas shock? Or do an independent rear suspension swap?

This sounds interesting. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it

With 16” wheels I think the biggest brake option is 312mm discs (GTI) your existing callipers will work fine with these you just need to change the carriers
Racingline and Forge both make a cold air intake and foam filter for a MK5 Golf that will fit
Don’t think there is much you can do to the steering ratio, there’s a recent thread about it
Handling wise poly bushes all round and stiffer anti roll bars make a big difference. It is possible to fit an alloy subframe, lower wishbones and hubs.
Gaz are a popular shocker for the rear and at the front fit your favourite MK5 Golf struts
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is

Thanks Beaker, I’m pretty anxious to keep going. I feel like the rally cars are more adapted to everyday road abuse than a track car. Seeing as they’re road racing cars. Can never forget the first time you hear a car with anti-lag! Just need a big break at the Casino now

Thanks for the input, it’s going in my notes ASAP.

I think for the brakes I’ll start with the braided lines, better pads, and new discs. For the speeds I’m going now I won’t need more stopping power.

Handling is another story. So, bushes are a must from the little I’m allowed to browse it goes a long way. For the anti-roll bars do you have any refs. or are the ones on Darkside’s website fine?

I’ve fitted Maxi front 23.6 and rear 22 because I only road use and was sticking to oem. Both are solid so stiffer than GTI or S3 etc which are the same size but hollow
There are after market ones that are bigger Whiteline maybe?
Once your post count is up there is plenty of info here to help you spend your money
